Celestion CDX1-1720: 1" neodymium driver with 1.75" titanium diaphragm from 800 Hz, 50 W AES, 107 dB

The Celestion CDX1-1720 is the CDX series' 1" compression driver for low crossover frequencies. Its 1.75" voice coil is the largest in the CDX1 range, the diaphragm is deep-drawn titanium with a polyimide surround, and the phase plug is designed for maximum suppression of diaphragm modes. The result: a frequency range of 800 Hz to 20,000 Hz, 50 W AES (100 W programme) and 107 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, at only 0.65 kg and 55 mm mounting depth thanks to the neodymium magnet.

The voice coil is edgewound from copper-clad aluminium wire. Edgewinding packs more conductor cross-section into the gap than round wire, which improves motor efficiency and heat dissipation. Together with the large diaphragm area of the 1.75" coil, that explains why this 1" driver can take on jobs otherwise reserved for 1.4"-throat models: two-way cabinets with a large woofer where the HF driver has to come in well below 2 kHz.

Use and enclosure

Celestion recommends a minimum crossover frequency of 1,500 Hz at 12 dB/oct. That is almost an octave above the 800 Hz lower limit and the starting point for passive crossovers. In a DSP system with 24 dB/oct you can go lower as long as the horn still loads in that range; below 1,500 Hz it is the horn, not the driver, that decides how clean and robust the result will be. A limiter in the HF channel is part of the deal with a low crossover, because excursion of the titanium diaphragm rises with every octave downwards.

As a 1" driver the CDX1-1720 fits the Celestion horns at 42.audio: H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040, each with matching mounting style. For the low crossover a horn with a larger mouth has the advantage; a small horn cancels out the driver's benefit. Typical applications are two-way cabinets with a 12" woofer in which a standard 1" driver crosses at 2 kHz and leaves a step in directivity; with the 1720 you can move the crossover lower and get a more homogeneous dispersion through the transition.

What to look out for

  • 50 W AES / 100 W programme at 8 Ω: with a low crossover use a steep high-pass and a limiter.
  • Minimum crossover 1,500 Hz at 12 dB/oct; lower is possible with steep filters and a large horn.
  • 0.65 kg and 55 mm mounting depth: neodymium, also for mobile cabinets.
  • 1.75" voice coil, edgewound, titanium diaphragm with polyimide surround.
  • 107 dB sensitivity, passive crossover with attenuator.

Frequently asked questions

How low can I cross the CDX1-1720?

With 12 dB/oct not below 1,500 Hz, as recommended by Celestion. With 24 dB/oct in a DSP and a horn with a large mouth you can approach the 800 Hz lower limit but should keep a margin. A limiter is then mandatory.

Is the 1720 worth it over a 1.4"-coil driver from the CDX series?

If you want to cross lower than about 2 kHz, yes: the 1.75" coil and titanium diaphragm give you the reach downwards and 50 W AES of reserve. For crossovers above 2 kHz a smaller model is sufficient. The price is a bit more weight and mounting depth.

Which horn fits the CDX1-1720?

A Celestion 1" horn with matching mounting, such as the H1-7050 'No Bell' or H1-9040P at 42.audio. The lower the crossover, the larger the horn mouth should be. Check the dispersion in the transition region to the woofer.
