Celestion CDX1-1730: 1" neodymium compression driver with 110 dB and bolt-on flange

The Celestion CDX1-1730 is a 1" exit compression driver from the CDX series with a neodymium magnet and a 1.75" voice coil. It is intended for the HF section of compact two-way PA cabinets, stage monitors and column speakers where weight and size matter: 0.65 kg and 55 mm mounting depth are figures no ferrite driver in this power class can match.

Diaphragm and surround are formed from a single piece of PETP film and sit in Celestion's Sound Castle diaphragm assembly. Unlike titanium, polyester film does not break up into hard partial resonances, but it is less stiff, which is perfectly adequate for the usable range up to 20,000 Hz in this class. The voice coil is edgewound from copper-clad aluminium wire, giving more conductor length in the gap at low moving mass. The horn interface is a bolt-on flange; the screw-on version is called CDX1-1731.

Use and enclosure

With 110 dB sensitivity, 40 W AES and 80 W continuous rating, the CDX1-1730 is a good match for 8" or 12" mid-woofers in two-way designs. The response starts at 1,200 Hz, and the recommended minimum crossover is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave. If you filter actively with a DSP at 24 dB/octave you can approach that value; with a passive 12 dB network I would cross noticeably higher, because excursion and distortion rise quickly below the crossover point.

For the 1" throat, the Celestion horns H1-9040P, H1SC-8050, H1SC-9040 and H1-7050 'No Bell' available at 42.audio are the natural partners. Check before ordering that the horn accepts a bolt-on flange. A series capacitor in front of the driver adds protection against switch-on noise and low-frequency faults.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω impedance: uncritical on any common PA or hi-fi amplifier, also behind a passive crossover.
  • Neodymium motor at 0.65 kg: takes real weight out of columns, monitors and portable boxes.
  • Mounting depth 55 mm: shallow enclosures behind the horn are possible.
  • Bolt-on flange: the horn must match, otherwise choose the threaded CDX1-1731.
  • Do not cross below 2,200 Hz (12 dB/oct); power handling 40 W AES.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the CDX1-1730 and the CDX1-1731?

Motor, diaphragm and data are identical: neodymium, PETP film, 40 W AES, 110 dB. The CDX1-1730 has a bolt-on flange, the CDX1-1731 a screw thread. Decide based on the horn you want to use.

Which amplifier makes sense?

With active crossover, a power amp in the region of 40 to 80 W into 8 Ω is plenty. Passively the crossover passes the power through; you will almost always need an attenuator, since 110 dB sensitivity is well above that of the woofer.

Is this driver suitable for home theatre or hi-fi?

Yes. On a matching 1" waveguide and with a clean crossover above 2,200 Hz, the PETP diaphragm works unobtrusively and without the edge of some metal diaphragms. Headroom for high levels in small rooms is more than sufficient.
