Celestion CDX1-1731: lightweight 1" screw-on driver, neodymium, PETP diaphragm, 110 dB
Screw thread instead of flange: the Celestion CDX1-1731 is the screw-on version of the CDX1-1730 and therefore the 1" neodymium driver of the CDX series for any horn with a threaded throat. Everything else stays the same: 1.75" voice coil, 40 W AES, 80 W continuous, 110 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω and a frequency range of 1,200 to 20,000 Hz.
The motor weighs 0.65 kg and is 55 mm deep; that is the class in which a driver can be hung into a column, a small monitor or a shallow two-way box without rethinking the cabinet structure. The one-piece PETP film diaphragm with integral surround sits in the Sound Castle assembly, and the voice coil is edgewound copper-clad aluminium. Use and enclosure
The manufacturer specifies 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave as the minimum crossover. In practice: with a passive second-order network, plan the crossover clearly above that mark; with an active crossover and steep slopes it can move closer. The band between 1,200 Hz and the crossover is usable, but not designed for power.
At 110 dB the CDX1-1731 sits well above any 8" or 12" mid-woofer in level, so an L-pad or DSP attenuation is part of the design. Frequently asked questions
Is the CDX1-1731 better than the CDX1-1730?
No, they are the same drivers with different horn mounting. The CDX1-1731 screws into a thread, the CDX1-1730 bolts onto a flange. There is no difference in sound or data.
What power amplifier do I need?
At 8 Ω and 40 W AES any small PA amplifier will do. With an active crossover, a channel of 40 to 80 W is more than enough; more important than power is a high-pass that protects the driver below the crossover.
Can I run the driver on a 1" horn from another manufacturer?
Yes, provided the horn has a 1" threaded throat. The horn's coverage angle and loading then determine frequency response and directivity; regardless of the horn, do not cross below 2,200 Hz.
