Celestion CDX1-1745: 1" ferrite compression driver, 40 W AES, 110 dB, bolt-on
When weight is not an issue but price is: the Celestion CDX1-1745 is the ferrite sibling of the CDX1-1730. Same 1.75" voice coil of edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire, same one-piece PETP diaphragm with integral surround in the Sound Castle assembly, same key data: 40 W AES, 80 W continuous, 110 dB, 8 Ω, 1,200 to 20,000 Hz.
The difference is the magnet. Ferrite needs far more material for the same flux density in the gap, which is why the CDX1-1745 weighs 2.3 kg, several times the neodymium model. Mounting depth is practically unchanged at 56 mm. For fixed installations, workshop boxes, rehearsal-room monitors and any application where the cabinet is not carried anyway, that is a sensible trade. The horn interface is a 1" bolt-on flange.
Use and enclosure
The CDX1-1745 handles the HF section of two-way cabinets with 8" to 12" mid-woofers. Recommended minimum crossover is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave. With a passive network I would set it a fair bit higher and shield the driver from low-frequency content with a series capacitor; the 1,200 Hz lower limit marks where useful output begins, not where power may be applied.
Matching 1" Celestion horns are available at 42.audio: H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040. Whether a horn offers bolt-on mounting is shown in its product listing; for threaded horns there is the otherwise identical CDX1-1746. The 110 dB sensitivity usually calls for several dB of attenuation relative to the woofer.
What to look out for
- Ferrite magnet at 2.3 kg: make the rear panel and horn mounting correspondingly sturdy.
- 8 Ω, 40 W AES: runs on any small PA amplifier, passively always with a high-pass.
- Allow 56 mm mounting depth behind the horn.
- Bolt-on flange; the threaded version is the CDX1-1746.
- 110 dB sensitivity: plan level matching to the woofer from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Does the CDX1-1745 sound different from the neodymium CDX1-1730?
No. Diaphragm, voice coil and phase plug are the same; only the magnet material differs. Neodymium saves weight, ferrite saves money; frequency response and power handling are specified identically.
Is this driver enough for a band PA?
For small to medium cabinets with 40 W AES per HF driver, yes, as long as the crossover is not below 2,200 Hz and a limiter prevents amplifier clipping. For large systems with high continuous load, the 1.4" models of the CDX series are the intended choice.
Which horn fits best?
That depends on the coverage you want. All four 1" Celestion horns in the shop are suitable in principle; just make sure the model has a bolt-on interface, otherwise pick the CDX1-1746.
