Celestion CDX1-1746: 1" compression driver with ferrite magnet and screw thread, 110 dB
The Celestion CDX1-1746 is a 1" compression driver with ferrite magnet and screw thread, built for threaded horns in two-way PA cabinets and monitors. Within the CDX series it is the affordable, heavier counterpart of the neodymium CDX1-1731 and the threaded version of the flange driver CDX1-1745.
Technically it carries the familiar combination: a 1.75" voice coil of edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire, a PETP diaphragm formed in one piece with its surround, and the Sound Castle diaphragm assembly. This yields 110 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, handles 40 W AES or 80 W continuous and covers 1,200 to 20,000 Hz. The 2.3 kg weight is almost entirely the ferrite ring; mounting depth is 56 mm.
Use and enclosure
Celestion states 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave as the minimum crossover. That is the lower limit for protected operation, not the target: for a passive second-order network the sensible crossover sits well above it, while with DSP and steep filters you can get closer to 2,200 Hz. At 110 dB sensitivity the driver is louder than practically any 8" or 12" mid-woofer, so attenuation belongs in the crossover design.
Threaded 1" horns from the Celestion range at 42.audio: H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040, plus H1-9040P and H1-7050 'No Bell'. Whether a given horn offers thread or flange is listed in its product data. For flange horns the CDX1-1745 is the right pick.
What to look out for
- 1" screw thread: the horn must have a threaded throat.
- 2.3 kg ferrite motor: no issue in stationary boxes, noticeable on tour.
- 40 W AES, 8 Ω: a small amplifier is enough, a high-pass is mandatory.
- Do not cross below 2,200 Hz (12 dB/oct), preferably higher.
Frequently asked questions
What separates the CDX1-1746 from the CDX1-1745?
Only the horn mounting: the CDX1-1746 has a screw thread, the CDX1-1745 a bolt-on flange. Motor, diaphragm and all data are the same, so the horn alone decides.
Is the extra cost of the neodymium CDX1-1731 worth it?
Only if you really need the much lower weight compared with 2.3 kg, for example in columns or portable boxes. In fixed installations the CDX1-1746 is the more economical choice with identical electroacoustic data.
Can I run two of them in parallel on one channel?
Two 8 Ω drivers in parallel make 4 Ω, which most PA amplifiers handle. Use identical horns and identical crossovers, otherwise the levels will not sum cleanly in the transition band.
