Celestion CDX1-1747: 1" driver with polyimide diaphragm, 60 W AES, crossover from 1,600 Hz

More power and a lower crossover: the Celestion CDX1-1747 is the higher-rated 1" ferrite driver of the CDX series. Instead of PETP film it uses a one-piece polyimide diaphragm with integral surround, held by the Sound Castle assembly with soft clamping. Polyimide tolerates far higher temperatures than polyester, and that is exactly what allows 60 W AES and 120 W continuous, far more than the PETP models of the series.

Added to that is a wider bandwidth: 1,000 to 20,000 Hz, with a recommended minimum crossover of 1,600 Hz at 12 dB/octave. Sensitivity stays at 110 dB, impedance at 8 Ω, and the voice coil at 1.75" with edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire. The ferrite motor weighs 2.3 kg, and at 53 mm the mounting depth is slightly less than on the PETP siblings. Connection is via a bolt-on flange.

Use and enclosure

The lower crossover makes the CDX1-1747 attractive for two-way boxes with 12" mid-woofers, where the higher crossover of the PETP models already pushes the woofer into beaming. With 1,600 Hz as the floor at 12 dB/octave, you can place the transition where horn and woofer have similar coverage angles. With an active crossover at 24 dB/octave this value can be used fully; passively I would leave some margin.

Suitable horns are the 1" Celestion models stocked by 42.audio: H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040. Since the CDX1-1747 has a bolt-on flange, check the horn's mounting type; the threaded version is called CDX1-1748. At 60 W AES and 110 dB, pairing it with a limiter in the DSP is the best protection against overload.

What to look out for

  • 60 W AES / 120 W continuous: noticeably more headroom than the PETP models in the series.
  • Minimum crossover 1,600 Hz (12 dB/oct): suits 12" mid-woofers.
  • Ferrite, 2.3 kg: build a sturdy rear panel and horn bracket.
  • Mounting depth 53 mm, bolt-on flange.
  • 8 Ω, 110 dB: plan for attenuation relative to the woofer.

Frequently asked questions

Why polyimide instead of PETP?

Polyimide withstands higher temperatures, so the driver may be loaded with 60 W AES, more than the PETP models. Add the soft clamping of the diaphragm, which reduces distortion at large excursion in the lower band. The result is the lower crossover from 1,600 Hz.

Which woofer goes with it?

A 12" mid-woofer is the classic partner, because a crossover around 1,600 to 2,000 Hz falls right where a 12" cone still works cleanly. 8" drivers work too, in which case the crossover can sit higher.

Difference from the CDX1-1745?

The CDX1-1745 has a PETP diaphragm, lower power handling and a higher minimum crossover. The CDX1-1747 offers polyimide, 60 W AES and 1,600 Hz. Weight, sensitivity and impedance are the same.
