Celestion CDX1-1770: compact 1" ferrite driver with 108 dB and soft-clamped diaphragm
The Celestion CDX1-1770 is a 1" compression driver with ferrite magnet and a newly developed Sound Castle diaphragm assembly with soft clamping. At 1.36 kg it sits between the neodymium and the classic ferrite models of the CDX series in weight; the motor is therefore more compact than on the heavy ferrite siblings.
Diaphragm and surround are a single piece of PETP film, driven by a 1.75" voice coil of copper-clad aluminium wire. Sensitivity is 108 dB at 8 Ω, power handling 40 W AES and 80 W continuous. The 55.6 mm mounting depth practically matches the rest of the 1" range. The driver is meant for cost-conscious two-way boxes, monitors and small installation speakers where a decent HF section without much weight is required.
Use and enclosure
The soft clamping of the diaphragm reduces distortion that rigidly clamped film diaphragms produce in the transition band. The stated minimum crossover is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave. In a passive two-way box with an 8" mid-woofer I would cross well above that and always include a series capacitor as protection; actively at 24 dB/octave you may move closer to the floor.
At 108 dB the CDX1-1770 sits just below the louder models of the series, which in practice slightly reduces the attenuation needed relative to the woofer. Frequently asked questions
Where is the difference from the CDX1-1745?
Both are 1" ferrite drivers with PETP diaphragm and 40 W AES. The CDX1-1770 has a more compact motor at 1.36 kg and 108 dB sensitivity, the CDX1-1745 is much heavier and slightly louder. For light boxes with moderate level requirements the CDX1-1770 is the leaner solution.
Is 108 dB sensitivity enough for PA?
For small and medium boxes yes; an 8" or 12" woofer usually sits below that, so attenuation is still required. For large systems with high continuous load the 1.4" drivers of the series are the intended choice.
Which amplifier fits?
At 8 Ω with an active crossover, a power amp in the 40 to 80 W range is enough. A limiter, or at least a properly sized high-pass, matters more than extra power.
