Celestion CDX14-2420: 1.4" neodymium driver, titanium diaphragm, 70 W AES, from 800 Hz

With the CDX14-2420, Celestion's CDX series moves up to the 1.4" horn interface. The neodymium driver uses a 2.4" voice coil of edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire and a deep-drawn titanium diaphragm with polyimide surround. Separating diaphragm and surround material is deliberate: titanium provides the stiffness for clean treble, while the polyimide surround stays compliant and keeps break-up resonances out of the transition band.

The phase plug is designed for maximum modal suppression, which smooths the response above the region where the diaphragm no longer moves as a piston. The key data: 70 W AES, 140 W continuous, 106.5 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, frequency range 800 to 20,000 Hz. All of it weighs 1.5 kg at 56 mm mounting depth, a very compact package for a 1.4" driver.

Use and enclosure

The minimum crossover is 1,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave. That makes the CDX14-2420 a candidate for two-way boxes with 12" mid-woofers, where a crossover between 1,200 and 2,000 Hz hands the cone's directivity over to the horn early. Actively with steep slopes you can use the 1,200 Hz; passively I advise some margin. The 106.5 dB is closer to the level of a good 12" cone than the louder drivers of the 1" range, which simplifies the crossover.

A 1.4" horn from Celestion is currently not listed at 42.audio; verified 1.4" horns in the shop are the 18Sound models XR1464C, XR1496C, XT1464, XG14 Alu, PR614 and H860 3D Print. Throat diameter matches; compare bolt pattern and mounting in the product data of both parts before buying. At 70 W AES a limiter belongs in the signal chain.

What to look out for

  • 1.4" throat with 2.4" voice coil: lower crossover from 1,200 Hz possible.
  • Neodymium, 1.5 kg: suitable for touring boxes.
  • 106.5 dB at 8 Ω: less attenuation to the woofer needed than with louder drivers.
  • 70 W AES / 140 W continuous, limiter recommended.
  • Mounting depth 56 mm.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the sensitivity lower than on the 1" models?

The larger diaphragm with polyimide surround and the extended low-end response cost some efficiency, but you gain bandwidth downwards and power handling. In a two-way box with a 12" woofer that is better balanced than a louder driver, which would have to be attenuated anyway.

Can I adapt the driver to a 1" horn?

Mechanically possible with an adapter, acoustically not sensible: the throat step from 1.4" to 1" creates reflections and ripple in the response. Use a horn with a 1.4" interface.

Difference from the CDX14-3055?

The CDX14-3055 has a 3" voice coil, higher power handling and sensitivity and crosses from 800 Hz. The CDX14-2420, with 2.4" coil, 70 W AES and crossover from 1,200 Hz, is the more compact, less expensive option for lower continuous load.
