Celestion CDX14-3035: 1.4" ferrite driver with 3" titanium diaphragm, 120 W AES, 108 dB

A 3" motor behind a 1.4" throat: the Celestion CDX14-3035 is the heavy ferrite driver of the CDX series for applications where continuous load and low-end bandwidth count. The 3" voice coil of edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire drives a one-piece titanium diaphragm whose surround is formed from the same sheet. A revised surround geometry is meant to improve linearity, and a clamp ring made of high-temperature polymer holds the diaphragm without the distortion a metal clamp can generate at that point.

The numbers speak for themselves: 120 W AES, 240 W continuous, 108 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and a frequency range of 500 to 20,000 Hz. The price is a 5.4 kg ferrite motor at 69 mm mounting depth. If you want the same motor with neodymium, it exists as the CDX14-3045 at 2 kg.

Use and enclosure

The recommended minimum crossover of 800 Hz at 12 dB/octave opens up designs that 1" drivers cannot do: two-way boxes with 12" or larger woofers where the transition lies below the cone's beaming frequency, or the mid-high section in three-way systems. With a passive second-order network I would start well above 800 Hz; with DSP and 24 dB/octave the crossover can move close to the floor.

Verified 1.4" horns at 42.audio are the 18Sound models XR1464C, XR1496C, XT1464, XG14 Alu, PR614 and H860 3D Print. Throat diameter matches; check bolt pattern and horn mounting in the product data of both parts. With 5.4 kg of driver weight, think about how the horn is fixed in the cabinet: the driver should not hang on the horn flange alone when the box is moved.

What to look out for

  • 5.4 kg ferrite magnet: brace horn and driver inside the cabinet.
  • 3" voice coil, 120 W AES / 240 W continuous: built for high continuous load.
  • Crossover from 800 Hz (12 dB/oct) possible, better with steep active filters.
  • Mounting depth 69 mm, 8 Ω, 108 dB.
  • One-piece titanium diaphragm: high stiffness, polymer clamp ring.

Frequently asked questions

CDX14-3035 or CDX14-3045?

Electroacoustically the same: 3" titanium diaphragm, 120 W AES, 108 dB, 500 to 20,000 Hz. The CDX14-3035 has ferrite and weighs 5.4 kg at 69 mm depth, the CDX14-3045 neodymium at 2 kg and a shallower build. For fixed installation ferrite is the economical choice, for touring neodymium.

Which woofer suits a crossover around 800 Hz?

A 12" driver or a larger woofer that works cleanly in a bass-reflex enclosure up to just above the crossover. The driver's 108 dB will then typically sit a few dB above the woofer and be matched in the DSP or with an L-pad.

Does the driver need a big amplifier?

Not necessarily. 120 W AES at 8 Ω means an amplifier with roughly that power per channel is enough if a limiter prevents clipping. More power only adds headroom, not higher continuous level.
