Celestion CDX14-3055: 1.4" neodymium driver with modal-suppression phase plug, 120 W AES

The Celestion CDX14-3055 combines the 3" neodymium motor of the CDX series with the manufacturer's newer diaphragm technology: a deep-drawn titanium diaphragm with polyimide surround, soft-clamped in the Sound Castle assembly, and in front of it a phase plug that specifically suppresses diaphragm modes. Compared with the one-piece titanium diaphragm of the CDX14-3045, this concept separates the tasks: titanium provides stiffness, polyimide the compliance of the surround.

The performance data match the other 3" models: 120 W AES, 240 W continuous, 108 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, frequency range 500 to 20,000 Hz. The 3" voice coil is edgewound from copper-clad aluminium wire. At 1.7 kg and 55 mm mounting depth, the CDX14-3055 is the lightest and shallowest 3" driver of the series at 42.audio.

Use and enclosure

The recommended minimum crossover is 800 Hz at 12 dB/octave. The driver is therefore intended for two-way boxes with 12" or larger woofers and for mid-high duty in three-way systems. If you really want to use the 800 Hz, cross actively at 24 dB/octave and set a limiter; passive first- or second-order networks need much more margin from the floor.

For the 1.4" throat, the 18Sound horns XR1464C, XR1496C, XT1464, XG14 Alu, PR614 and H860 3D Print are verified at 42.audio; compare bolt pattern and mounting in both product listings. The polyimide surround and the modal-suppression phase plug matter mostly in the upper range, where titanium diaphragms without these measures show resonances; for applications demanding even treble, this is the more interesting of the two neodymium 3" drivers.

What to look out for

  • 1.7 kg, 55 mm mounting depth: lightest and shallowest 3" driver in the CDX series.
  • 120 W AES / 240 W continuous at 8 Ω, provide a limiter.
  • Crossover from 800 Hz (12 dB/oct), active with steep filters recommended.
  • Titanium diaphragm with polyimide surround and modal-suppression phase plug for smoother treble.
  • 1.4" horn interface.

Frequently asked questions

CDX14-3055 or CDX14-3045, which is better?

Both have 120 W AES, 108 dB and 500 to 20,000 Hz. The CDX14-3055 relies on polyimide surround, soft clamping and a modal-suppression phase plug, which promises a more even treble range, and at 1.7 kg it is lighter. The CDX14-3045 with its one-piece titanium diaphragm is the simpler construction.

How low can I cross?

800 Hz at 12 dB/octave is the floor. With DSP and 24 dB/octave you can start there; passively the safe crossover is higher. Below the crossover, diaphragm excursion rises, and that is exactly where distortion and damage occur.

Is the driver suitable for a high-quality home horn system?

Yes. 108 dB and response up to 20,000 Hz allow a two-way layout with a large woofer and no super tweeter. The excess level is matched with a DSP or an attenuator, and the power handling is never reached in a living room.
