Celestion CDX20-3020: 2" ferrite driver, 3" titanium diaphragm, 100 W AES, from 800 Hz
The Celestion CDX20-3020 is the 2" driver of the CDX series: ferrite magnet, 3" voice coil of edgewound copper-clad aluminium wire and a one-piece titanium diaphragm whose surround is formed from the diaphragm sheet. The large throat is meant for 2" horns as used in classic PA systems, large two-way boxes and mid-high horns.
The data: 100 W AES, 200 W continuous, 107 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, frequency range 500 to 18,000 Hz. The ferrite motor weighs 4.9 kg, mounting depth is 68 mm. The 18,000 Hz upper limit is typical for a 2" throat: the longer path through the phase plug and the larger diaphragm area cost some bandwidth at the top, but in return the driver works very relaxed in the midrange on a 2" horn.
Use and enclosure
The stated minimum crossover is 800 Hz at 12 dB/octave. Together with a 2" horn that makes the mid-high section of a three-way system or the upper half of a large two-way box with a 12" or larger woofer. Passively I would keep a healthy distance from 800 Hz; actively with 24 dB/octave and a limiter you can use the floor. The 107 dB are close to the level of large woofers, so attenuation stays small.
A 2" horn from Celestion is not listed at 42.audio; the verified option is the 18Sound horn XR2064C with 2" interface. Throat diameter matches; compare bolt pattern and mounting in the product data of both parts. With 4.9 kg of driver weight, supporting the driver inside the cabinet is mandatory if the box is transported.
What to look out for
- 2" horn interface: only use horns with a 2" throat, no adapters to 1.4" or 1".

Frequently asked questions
Why 2" rather than 1.4"?
The 2" throat fits large horns that load the midrange lower and with defined coverage. The 1.4" models of the series such as the CDX14-3035 reach slightly higher at 20,000 Hz; the CDX20-3020 stops at 18,000 Hz but works with less distortion in the midrange on a 2" horn.
Do I need a super tweeter?
In most PA applications no, 18,000 Hz is sufficient for speech and music. For hi-fi use where the last bit of the top octave matters, a small tweeter can be added above, but that means tuning another crossover properly.
Which power amplifier makes sense?
An amplifier with about 100 W into 8 Ω per channel is enough if a limiter prevents clipping. At 107 dB sensitivity the power is rarely called upon in operation; more important is a high-pass that protects the driver below 800 Hz.
