Celestion CF0617M: 6.5" midrange with 96 dB and a phase-plug-ready cone
The Celestion CF0617M is a 6.5" driver from the CF series which, despite being filed under woofers in the shop, is a pure midrange unit: rated band 300 to 7000 Hz, Fs 116.6 Hz, 96 dB sensitivity and 200 W AES at 8 Ω. A cast aluminium frame, ferrite magnet and a 1.75" voice coil of edge-wound copper-clad aluminium wire on a glass-fibre former form the basis. The cone is Kevlar-loaded paper, the surround high-temperature foam.
Two details give away the intended use: the inverted dust cap allows a phase plug to sit close to the cone, and the frame is designed to accept a rear cover, in other words its own midrange chamber right on the driver. The pole piece carries a copper sleeve that reduces the inductance rise towards high frequencies. With only 11.6 g of moving mass and a 9.68 Tm motor the driver is built for speed and efficiency in the midrange, not for excursion: 2.7 mm Xmax is entirely sufficient for that job.
Use and enclosure
In a three-way system the CF0617M covers the band between woofer and tweeter. As a midrange it belongs in a sealed chamber; the guideline from the parameters is 3.7 l with an in-box resonance of 183 Hz. Since the lower rated limit is 300 Hz, it makes sense to cross over well above that resonance so the cone is no longer working near resonance in the overlap region and the modest 2.7 mm Xmax does not become the bottleneck. Upwards the rated band extends to 7000 Hz, so a compression driver or dome only needs to take over quite high.
At 78.5 mm mounting depth, a 150 mm cut-out and 1.9 kg the driver fits narrow baffles and columns; the compact footprint allows tight driver spacing, which helps vertical directivity in arrays. At 96 dB a small amplifier is enough, and with Re 5.3 Ω the load is uncritical for any 8 Ω output.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the CF0617M as a mid-woofer in a two-way box?
No, it is not built for that. Fs 116.6 Hz, Vas 5.39 l and 2.7 mm Xmax do not yield usable bass; the EBP of 242 confirms the design intent as a midrange or horn driver. Plan it as the midrange between a woofer and a tweeter.
What enclosure does the CF0617M need?
A sealed midrange chamber, roughly 3.7 l as a guideline. Damp it well so reflections do not radiate back through the thin paper cone, and use the frame's rear cover option if you want to close the chamber directly at the driver.
Which tweeter goes with it?
With the rated band extending to 7000 Hz, both a 1" compression driver on a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category and a dome tweeter will work. The exact crossover point depends on the tweeter; the CF0617M leaves you plenty of room at the top.
