Celestion CF1025C: 10" mid-bass driver with 99 dB for loud tops and monitors
99 dB sensitivity from a 10" driver: the Celestion CF1025C from the CF series is built for efficiency. 300 W AES at 8 Ω, a rated band of 60 to 5000 Hz, a 2.5" voice coil of edge-wound copper-clad aluminium wire on a glass-fibre former and a vented ferrite magnet in a cast aluminium frame form the basis. The Kevlar-loaded paper cone sits in a cloth-sealed surround, and twin demodulation rings in the motor linearise the flux, which lowers distortion at high levels.
The parameters show the typical PA mid-bass driver: Qts 0.265, Fs 54.8 Hz, Vas 38.63 l, a moving mass of only 37 g with a 14.82 Tm motor and Xmax 4.25 mm. The EBP of 183 assigns it clearly to vented or horn-loaded enclosures; deep bass from a sealed box is not its brief. Compared with its sibling, the CF1025BMB, it trades excursion and extension for considerably more level per watt.
Use and enclosure
As a vented guideline the figures come out at about 13 l tuned to 76 Hz with a cut-off around 91 Hz. That is the recipe for a compact, loud top cabinet or stage monitor with a subwoofer working underneath. Sealed, the result is about 6.3 l with a 146 Hz in-box resonance, sensible as a midrange chamber in a three-way system where the CF1025C only handles the lower-mid and midrange band. Fine-tune it with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The upper rated limit of 5000 Hz leaves room for a two-way crossover to a 1" or 1.4" compression driver on a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category; pick the transition well below that limit so the 10" cone is not yet beaming strongly in the overlap region. At 4.9 kg, 119 mm mounting depth and a 230.8 mm cut-out it is slightly heavier than the BMB, but thanks to 99 dB the amplifier power required stays small.
What to look out for
- 99 dB sensitivity: high level from a moderate amplifier.
- Xmax 4.25 mm and EBP 183: vented or horn loading, set the high-pass below tuning.
- Twin demodulation rings and edge-wound wire: low distortion, Le only 0.57 mH.
- Re 5.15 Ω: easy 8 Ω load.
- 119 mm deep, 230.8 mm cut-out, 4.9 kg.
Frequently asked questions
How low does the CF1025C play in a vented box?
The guideline is 13 l tuned to 76 Hz with a cut-off around 91 Hz. That makes it a top-cabinet driver that leaves the deep bass to a subwoofer; if you need bass without a sub, go for the CF1025BMB with its much lower resonance frequency.
How does it differ from the CF1025BMB?
The CF1025C offers 99 dB and thus considerably more efficiency, but only 4.25 mm Xmax and a higher resonance of 54.8 Hz. The C is designed for loudness and transient response in the mid-bass, the BMB for extension from a small volume with more excursion.
Which amplifier suits 300 W AES at 99 dB?
An amplifier around the AES rating into 8 Ω is entirely sufficient; the efficiency means you will rarely call on full power. A high-pass filter below the tuning frequency is mandatory with 4.25 mm Xmax, otherwise excursion limits the driver before the coil does.
