Celestion CF1230BMB: 12" bass/mid driver with 3" coil and 7 mm Xmax for full-range boxes
Anyone planning a 12" two-way box without a subwoofer needs a driver that handles extension and midrange equally well. The Celestion CF1230BMB from the CF series is built precisely for that: 350 W AES on a 3" copper-clad aluminium voice coil, 96 dB at 8 Ω and a rated band of 50 to 3000 Hz. The glass-loaded paper cone carries a weather-resistant coating and sits in a half-roll elastomer surround that frees up the 7 mm Xmax. Cast aluminium frame, ferrite magnet with airflow venting for cooling.
The motor contains two measures against distortion: a modified T-pole profile for a more symmetrical Bl curve over excursion, and a demodulation ring that lowers harmonic and intermodulation distortion. The parameters: Fs 43.4 Hz, Qts 0.381, Vas 60.68 l, 88.4 g of moving mass and an 18.38 Tm motor. With an EBP of 104 the driver sits right at the threshold where a vented box is the obvious choice but sealed loading remains a usable alternative.
Use and enclosure
The vented guideline is 57 l tuned to 43 Hz with a cut-off around 44 Hz. That is a classic full-range box for bands, DJs or installation, delivering a complete bass foundation without a sub. Sealed, the figures come out at about 25 l with an 81 Hz in-box resonance; that is the version for a compact top or a monitor above a subwoofer, where the 12" only covers lower-mid and midrange. Both variants can be adapted to your internal dimensions with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The upper rated limit of 3000 Hz is generous for a 12", yet in a two-way box you sensibly cross well below it to a 1" or 1.4" compression driver on a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category, because a cone area of 0.0531 m² beams long before the rated limit. At 155.5 mm mounting depth, a 285.6 mm cut-out and 6.75 kg the driver is designed for manageable cabinets.
What to look out for
- Xmax 7 mm with elastomer surround: extension into the forties from 57 l vented, as a guideline.
- 3" voice coil and vented magnet carry the 350 W AES thermally.
- T-pole and demodulation ring: less distortion at high excursion.
- 155.5 mm mounting depth, 285.6 mm cut-out, 6.75 kg.
- Re 5.84 Ω, Le 0.713 mH: benign 8 Ω load.
Frequently asked questions
CF1230BMB or CF1230F: which 12" fits my box?
The CF1230BMB, with Fs 43.4 Hz, Vas 60.68 l and Qts 0.381, is built for extension from a vented box and delivers 96 dB. The CF1230F is louder, handles more power and is more tightly tuned, but does not play as low. Full-range without a sub: BMB. Top cabinet above a sub with maximum level: F.
Is the CF1230BMB enough as the only bass driver for a party box?
In 57 l vented tuned to 43 Hz it reaches down to roughly 44 Hz as a guideline, which is sufficient for music without a subwoofer. The 7 mm Xmax sets the limit at high levels; a high-pass below the tuning frequency protects the cone from over-excursion.
Which amplifier suits 350 W AES at 8 Ω?
An amplifier around the AES rating into 8 Ω is a good fit; at 96 dB the efficiency is high enough that you do not need to oversize. More important than power is the high-pass, so the 7 mm of travel is not exceeded on deep transients.
