Celestion CF1230F: 12" woofer with 98 dB and 500 W AES for loud top cabinets
The Celestion CF1230F is the CF series' 12" woofer with a focus on level and power handling: 500 W AES on a 3" voice coil of edge-wound copper-clad aluminium wire, 98 dB at 8 Ω, rated band 50 to 3000 Hz. The glass-loaded paper cone has a weather-resistant impregnation and sits in a cloth-sealed surround; the ferrite magnet in the cast aluminium frame uses balanced airflow venting so the coil can shed heat under continuous load. A demodulation ring in the motor keeps the flux linear under current.
Compared with the CF1230BMB bass/mid driver, the CF1230F is tighter and lighter on its feet: Fs 56.5 Hz, Qts 0.317, Vas 49.61 l, only 63.8 g of moving mass with an 18.33 Tm motor. Xmax is nevertheless high at 7.5 mm, which together with the 3" coil provides the excursion headroom for the 500 W AES. The EBP of 165 clearly points to vented or horn loading; a sealed box only makes sense here as a midrange chamber.
Use and enclosure
As a vented guideline the parameters give about 28 l tuned to 67 Hz, meaning a lower cut-off around 73 Hz. That is the recipe for a compact, very loud 12" top or a stage monitor whose deep bass is handled by a subwoofer. If you use the driver in a three-way system for lower-mid and midrange only, you can run it sealed in about 12 l with a 126 Hz in-box resonance. At 98 dB the CF1230F is on par with many compression-driver-and-horn combinations, so little high-frequency level has to be thrown away in a passive two-way box. Set the crossover to a 1" or 1.4" driver on a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category well below the 3000 Hz upper rated limit. Mounting depth 153 mm, cut-out 285.6 mm, weight 6.8 kg.

Does the CF1230F need a subwoofer underneath?
For deep bass, yes: in the 28 l vented guideline tuned to 67 Hz the cut-off is around 73 Hz. The driver is designed for level in the mid-bass; if you want to go lower from a 12" without a sub, the CF1230BMB is the better fit.
What does the demodulation ring do in practice?
It acts as a shorting ring against modulation of the magnetic flux by the coil current. That reduces distortion at high levels and keeps the inductance low at 0.74 mH, so the response runs more evenly up to the crossover.
Which amplifier suits 500 W AES at 8 Ω?
An amplifier around the AES rating into 8 Ω makes full use of the driver; thanks to 98 dB that gets you very high levels. A high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory so the 7.5 mm Xmax is not exceeded on deep transients.
