Celestion CF1540F: 15" woofer with Fs 29.1 Hz, 97 dB and 600 W AES
A resonance frequency of 29.1 Hz on a 15" with 97 dB: the Celestion CF1540F from the CF series combines a very compliant suspension with a strong 23.15 Tm motor. Rated at 600 W AES on a 4" round copper wire voice coil on a glass-fibre former, at 8 Ω, with a rated band of 35 to 2000 Hz. The glass-loaded cellulose cone has a weather-resistant impregnation, the surround is cloth-sealed, and the ferrite magnet in the cast aluminium frame is vented.
The Vas of 227.867 l results from the compliant suspension and a cone area of 0.0855 m²; together with Qts 0.235 and 128.9 g of moving mass this gives a driver that is tightly controlled in a comparatively small box rather than demanding a huge volume. The EBP of 120 recommends vented or horn loading. With 8.6 mm Xmax there is enough excursion headroom for low tunings.
Use and enclosure
The vented guideline is 54 l tuned to 45 Hz with a cut-off around 57 Hz, a compact enclosure for a 15" that works as a full-range box or as a powerful top in a two-way PA. Sealed, the figures come out at about 28 l with an 88 Hz in-box resonance, which restricts the driver to lower-mid and midrange above a subwoofer. Because of the large Vas the tuning is sensitive to volume, so a pass through the enclosure calculator at 42.audio is worthwhile.
The rated band ends at 2000 Hz; in two-way operation set the crossover to a 1.4" or 2" compression driver on a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category well below that, because the 15" cone beams strongly in the upper midrange. Allow for 181.8 mm mounting depth, a 354.5 mm cut-out and 9.62 kg of driver weight in the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Vas so large at 227.867 l?
Vas expresses the suspension compliance as an air volume; with a cone area of 0.0855 m² and a resonance of 29.1 Hz the suspension is very soft. That does not mean you need a huge enclosure: with Qts 0.235 the vented guideline is 54 l.
CF1540F or CF1540HD?
The CF1540F has the lower resonance at Fs 29.1 Hz and a much larger Vas, while the CF1540HD with its double suspension is designed for higher power handling and more excursion. For full-range boxes at moderate power the F is the lighter choice, for subwoofer duty with high continuous load the HD.
Which amplifier suits 600 W AES at 8 Ω?
An amplifier around the AES rating into 8 Ω is a good match; at 97 dB that gets you high levels. A high-pass below the tuning frequency matters, because a vented box no longer limits excursion below tuning.
