Celestion DT25S: compact 1" neodymium tweeter with silk diaphragm for small cabinets

The Celestion DT25S is a tweeter in compression-driver format with a 1" horn throat, but with a silk diaphragm instead of metal. Diaphragm and surround are formed as a single piece, the motor is a neodymium magnet, and the 1" voice coil is wound with copper-clad aluminium wire. The result is a very small, light component with only 24.5 mm mounting depth that fits into enclosures where a conventional ferrite driver would not.

Within its category the DT25S sits at the low end of the power scale: 10 W AES, 20 W continuous, 94 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω. This is not a driver for high-SPL sound reinforcement; it is a solution for compact two-way boxes, monitors, ceiling speakers and columns where a 1" horn or waveguide should control directivity without the high sensitivity of a PA driver having to be thrown away again in an L-pad. The usable range runs from 1,700 to 20,000 Hz.

Use and enclosure

Celestion specifies a minimum crossover frequency of 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave. If you only want a single capacitor as the high-pass (6 dB), cross over considerably higher; a filter with 12 or 18 dB slope allows a crossover closer to the 2,200 Hz mark. At 10 W AES the filter is also the driver's protection – it keeps out low-mid content that would thermally overload the 1" coil. With 94 dB the DT25S sits at the level of many mid-woofers, so in passive crossovers little or no attenuation is usually needed.

For the horn, the 1" models from the Celestion range fit: H1-7050 ‘No Bell’, H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040 share the same 1" throat. Choose by desired coverage angle and front plate; for small boxes the most compact horn makes sense, since the driver itself takes almost no depth. For a passive two-way cabinet with an 8" or 10" mid-woofer this is a straightforward, lightweight high-frequency solution.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω and 94 dB: matches typical mid-woofers in passive crossovers without heavy attenuation.
  • Only 10 W AES: high-pass of at least 12 dB/octave, crossover no lower than 2,200 Hz.
  • 24.5 mm mounting depth, neodymium magnet: light and shallow, fits tight enclosures.
  • Silk diaphragm with integrated surround: less metallic breakup, but not a driver for high SPL.
  • 1" throat: run only on a 1" horn or waveguide, never free-radiating.

Frequently asked questions

Which cabinets is the DT25S meant for?

Compact two-way boxes, small monitors, column and installation speakers where a horn should control directivity. With 10 W AES and 94 dB it is not intended for loud PA tops; there you need a driver with a larger coil and more power handling.

Which horn fits the DT25S?

Any horn with a 1" throat. From Celestion, 42.audio carries the H1-7050 ‘No Bell’, H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040; which one depends on the coverage angle you want and the front plate of your cabinet.

What should the crossover look like?

High-pass at 2,200 Hz or above with 12 dB/octave, steeper if you like. A single capacitor is only enough if you cross over considerably higher, because of the low power handling. The response up to 20,000 Hz needs no equalisation in the treble.
