Celestion FTR08-2011D: 8" mid/bass driver with cast frame, 200 W AES and 93 dB
The Celestion FTR08-2011D is an 8" woofer from the FTR series, Celestion's cast-aluminium-frame range for professional use. A ferrite motor, a 2" voice coil on a polyimide former and a Kevlar-loaded paper cone with a moisture-resistant coating: that is the equipment of a driver built to cover 70 to 6000 Hz in compact full-range cabinets, stage monitors and small sound reinforcement systems. At 200 W AES (400 W programme) and 93 dB, it sits clearly above the TF series' pressed-steel eights.
The pole piece carries a copper sleeve that damps the rise of voice coil inductance towards high frequencies. At 0.38 mH, the Le is low for an 8" woofer with a 2" coil, and that is exactly what enables the extended, even response up into the presence region. The vented magnet assembly limits thermal compression. With Fs 86.1 Hz, Qts 0.436 and Vas 8.99 l, this is unmistakably a mid/bass driver for small enclosures, not a subwoofer.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 159 points the way: bass reflex is the natural choice. As a guide value, a vented box comes out at 12 l tuned to 76 Hz, giving a lower cut-off f3 around 72 Hz. In a sealed box the driver lands at roughly 5.5 l with a system resonance of 140 Hz. That is an alignment for a midrange compartment in a 3-way system or for a satellite that hands over to a subwoofer. Both are approximations; refine the tuning and port length with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
In a 2-way cabinet with a 1" compression driver and a horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides category, the 6000 Hz upper limit lets you set the crossover according to the HF driver rather than the woofer. The cut-out is 187 mm and the mounting depth 102 mm, so the FTR08-2011D also fits shallow monitor enclosures.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.82 Ω: an easy load for any PA amplifier delivering 200 to 400 W into 8 Ω.
- Mounting depth 102 mm, cut-out 187 mm: compact enough for shallow monitor and satellite cabinets.
- 3.65 kg: the ferrite magnet and cast frame make it noticeably heavier than a pressed-steel eight-inch driver.
- Xmax 5.5 mm linear: respectable for a mid/bass driver, but no substitute for a subwoofer.
- Kevlar-loaded coated cone and sealed cloth surround: suitable for rental and outdoor use.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FTR08-2011D enough as the only woofer in a small PA cabinet?
For speech, acoustic sets or stage monitoring, yes: 93 dB and 200 W AES deliver plenty of level. Add a subwoofer for deep bass below about 70 Hz; with an Fs of 86.1 Hz this eight is not a low-bass unit.
Which amplifier suits the FTR08-2011D?
An amplifier delivering 200 to 400 W into 8 Ω is the right ballpark, with the 400 W programme rating as the upper end. More important than wattage is a high-pass below the tuning frequency to keep cone travel under control in a vented box.
Can the FTR08-2011D also work as a midrange in a 3-way system?
Yes. Sealed in roughly 5.5 l (guide value, fc 140 Hz) it performs cleanly as a midrange above that resonance. The low inductance of 0.38 mH and the copper sleeve on the pole piece keep the response even up to the hand-over to the tweeter.
