Celestion FTR12-3070C: 12" bass/mid driver with 3" coil, 350 W AES and 96 dB
If you are building a 12" 2-way cabinet for live sound, you need a driver that covers bass and midrange in one go. The Celestion FTR12-3070C is designed for exactly that: a 12" woofer with a cast aluminium frame, ferrite magnet and 3" voice coil on a glass-fibre former, working from 40 to 4000 Hz with 96 dB sensitivity. Power handling is 350 W AES, equivalent to 700 W programme.
The glass-loaded paper cone carries a weather-resistant impregnation and the cloth surround is sealed, the right combination for cabinets that travel in rental fleets or sit on outdoor stages. The motor delivers a BL of 18.58 Tm at Re 5.59 Ω, a strong figure that shows up in the low electrical Q of 0.362. Together with Fs 65.1 Hz and Vas 43.7 l, this makes a driver that works very efficiently in small vented boxes and, thanks to the vented magnet system, stays thermally stable under sustained load.
Use and enclosure
With Qts 0.321 and an EBP of 180, the FTR12-3070C belongs in a bass reflex enclosure. The guide value is 25 l net volume tuned to 76 Hz, giving an f3 around 83 Hz. That is a compact box for a twelve-inch driver, which keeps the cabinet light and portable. Deep bass is explicitly not the goal; below the tuning frequency a subwoofer takes over in a sensible system. A sealed variant of about 11 l with fc 143 Hz is conceivable as a midrange compartment in a large 3-way design. The upper limit of 4000 Hz allows a classic 2-way split with a compression driver and horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides range. Where exactly you cross over depends on the HF driver; the 3" coil ensures the twelve does not hit its thermal limit prematurely in the midrange. Cut-out 286 mm, mounting depth 102 mm.
What to look out for
- 350 W AES at 8 Ω: amplifiers delivering 350 to 700 W into 8 Ω fit, and a high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory.
- Only 102 mm mounting depth: very shallow for a 12" woofer, good for slim cabinets.
- 6.3 kg: typical ferrite weight, still no problem for a single driver in a hand-carried box.
- Xmax 5.5 mm: sufficient for bass/mid duty above a subwoofer, not for stand-alone deep bass.
- Le 1.09 mH: factor the impedance rise into the crossover design for the midrange.
Frequently asked questions
Can the FTR12-3070C run without a subwoofer?
In a full-range cabinet with 25 l vented volume, the lower limit sits around 83 Hz, which is fine for speech, vocals and instruments with little deep-bass content. For punchy kick and bass, run it above a subwoofer and relieve it with a high-pass filter.
Why does the FTR12-3070C reach 96 dB with only 5.5 mm Xmax?
Sensitivity and excursion are a trade-off: a strong motor (BL 18.58 Tm) with a light cone (Mms 54.6 g) delivers a lot of level per watt, while linear excursion stays limited. For a bass/mid driver that is the right priority.
What is the difference to the larger FTR15-3070C?
The 15" sibling offers higher sensitivity and higher power handling but needs a many times larger enclosure. The twelve is the choice when the cabinet must stay small and the midrange up to 4000 Hz must remain clean.
