Celestion FTR12-4075F: low-profile 12" woofer with 4" coil, 700 W AES and 4 Ω
Two things make the Celestion FTR12-4075F stand out within the FTR series: the low impedance of 4 Ω and the shallow cast aluminium frame with a mounting depth of only 121 mm. Both target systems where several twelves hang in parallel on one amplifier channel while the cabinet still needs to stay slim, such as line array elements or active boxes with limited space. With 700 W AES (1400 W programme), a 4" voice coil and 95 dB sensitivity, it is a pure LF driver, not a bass/mid unit.
The voice coil is edge-wound from copper-clad aluminium wire, which saves mass and improves gap fill. The former is a glass-fibre-polyimide composite, the cone is cellulose with a sealed cloth surround. A double suspension keeps the cone travelling symmetrically across the full 9 mm Xmax. With Fs 37.1 Hz, Qts 0.272 and Vas 89.16 l the motor is tightly tuned; the Mms of 82.3 g is moderate for a 12" long-throw driver and keeps efficiency high.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 127 clearly favours bass reflex. The guide value is 32 l tuned to 50 Hz, with an f3 landing at roughly 60 Hz. For a twelve that is a pleasantly small volume that makes good use of the 9 mm excursion. A sealed box would be around 15 l with fc 96 Hz, which cuts the low-end extension substantially and makes little sense for a woofer of this class. You can do the exact alignment with port area and length in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The 4 Ω rating is the decisive point when choosing an amplifier: a single driver loads the amp like two parallel 8 Ω units, and two FTR12-4075F in parallel present 2 Ω, which demands an amplifier explicitly rated for it. With this long-throw driver you set the upper crossover in the bass region; in a 3-way system a dedicated driver handles the midrange.
What to look out for
- 4 Ω, Re 2.9 Ω: the amplifier must drive 4 Ω loads reliably; parallel wiring leads to 2 Ω.
- Mounting depth 121 mm with a 4" motor: for shallow cabinets and line array modules.
- 8.78 kg weight, cut-out 283 mm.
- Xmax 9 mm with double suspension: linear travel for controlled deep bass.
- Copper-clad aluminium, edge-wound: light coil, high power handling of 700 W AES.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the FTR12-4075F only available in 4 Ω?
The low impedance draws more power from the amplifier at the same voltage, which makes sense in active systems and single-driver-per-channel setups. With parallel wiring you have to be careful, though: two units present 2 Ω.
What amplifier power makes sense?
700 W AES into 4 Ω is the continuous rating, 1400 W programme the upper limit. Choose an amplifier in that range at 4 Ω and add a high-pass below the reflex tuning so excursion does not rise uncontrolled below 50 Hz.
Can I use the FTR12-4075F as a bass/mid driver in a 2-way cabinet?
It is possible but not its core purpose: Celestion specifies no midrange band for it, and the long-throw design targets bass. In a 2-way cabinet the FTR series bass/mid twelve with 3" coil would be the more appropriate choice.
