Celestion FTR12-4080DL: 12" long-throw subwoofer driver with 13.6 mm Xmax and 700 W AES
A twelve specified for 20 to 300 Hz, with 88 dB sensitivity and 13.6 mm Xmax: with the Celestion FTR12-4080DL, Celestion has set its priorities unambiguously. Excursion and extension count here, not efficiency. This is a subwoofer driver for compact bass cabinets where a 15" or 18" unit does not fit, and it extracts as much volume displacement from the 12" format as possible.
The motor provides that with a 4" voice coil on an aluminium former, a ferrite magnet with a vented structure and a BL of 24.05 Tm. The glass-loaded, weather-resistant impregnated paper cone sits in an elastomer half-roll surround that follows the long stroke without bottoming, and a double suspension keeps the motion symmetrical. The moving mass is high at 176.1 g, which pushes the resonance down to 28.9 Hz; Qts 0.303 and Vas 68.6 l complete the picture of a long-throw woofer rated at 700 W AES (1400 W programme).
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 84, the FTR12-4080DL allows both enclosure types. The bass reflex guide value is 33 l tuned to 36 Hz, giving an f3 around 40 Hz. A 12" subwoofer reaching 40 Hz in around 33 l is exactly why you would pick this driver over a larger format. Sealed, it comes out at roughly 15 l with fc 67 Hz; that is the choice when you equalise with DSP and want to use excursion at low frequencies in a controlled way. Both figures are approximations you should refine with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The upper limit of 300 Hz makes its role clear: the FTR12-4080DL is a pure subwoofer or the LF section of a 3-way system, and the crossover to the midrange sits correspondingly low. At 88 dB you need noticeably more amplifier power than with a typical PA twelve for the same level, but in return you get genuine low-end extension from a small box. Mounting depth 169 mm, cut-out 282 mm.
What to look out for
- 88 dB sensitivity: plan for amplifier power in the 700 to 1400 W range into 8 Ω.
- Mounting depth 169 mm: considerably deeper than the low-profile FTR twelves, check cabinet depth.
- 10.2 kg: a heavy ferrite motor in a compact cabinet, plan for handles.
- Xmax 13.6 mm: elastomer half-roll surround and double suspension for symmetrical long throw.
- Le 2.07 mH: irrelevant for subwoofer duty, but an argument against midrange use.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FTR12-4080DL suitable for a compact home cinema or studio subwoofer?
Yes, that is one of its best use cases. In a 33 l vented box it reaches about 40 Hz as a guide value; sealed in 15 l it can be equalised deeper with DSP. The 13.6 mm Xmax provides enough excursion headroom for that.
Why is the sensitivity as low as 88 dB?
Low resonance and long excursion cost efficiency: the heavy cone (Mms 176.1 g) brings Fs down to 28.9 Hz but pushes the sensitivity down. It is a deliberate trade of level for extension from a small volume.
Can I run two FTR12-4080DL in parallel on one amplifier channel?
Yes, two 8 Ω drivers in parallel present 4 Ω, which any PA amplifier will drive. Make sure there is enough power per driver and use a high-pass below the tuning frequency, otherwise excursion in a vented box rises uncontrolled below 36 Hz.
