Celestion FTR15-3070C: 15" bass/mid driver with 99 dB, 400 W AES and full gap saturation
99 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω: the Celestion FTR15-3070C is a 15" woofer built for efficiency. Inside the cast aluminium frame sits a ferrite motor whose air gap is driven to saturation. That raises the force factor (BL 17.33 Tm) and at the same time lowers distortion, because the field in the gap depends less on the coil current. The driver handles 400 W AES, i.e. 800 W programme, and works from 40 to 4000 Hz.
The 3" round copper wire voice coil on a glass-fibre former sits in a vented magnet system that carries heat away dynamically. The glass-loaded paper cone has a weather-resistant impregnation and the cloth surround is sealed; single suspension, Xmax 5.5 mm. With Fs 41.4 Hz, Qts 0.382 and a large Vas of 187.62 l, this fifteen is the classic choice for 2-way full-range cabinets in which one driver covers bass and midrange and a horn takes over above. The moving mass of 81.7 g is low for this format and one reason for the high sensitivity.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 97 permits both bass reflex and sealed designs; in practice vented is the norm. The guide value is 178 l net volume tuned to 41 Hz with an f3 also around 41 Hz. That is a large box, owed to the high Vas, and in smaller cabinets the cut-off rises accordingly. Sealed, it comes out at about 77 l with fc 77 Hz, which turns the fifteen into a bass/mid driver above a subwoofer in a 3-way system. At the top end the FTR15-3070C plays up to 4000 Hz, allowing a 2-way split with a compression driver and horn from Celestion's horns and waveguides range. Set the crossover according to the HF driver and the cone's directivity, not according to the woofer's upper limit. Mounting depth 158 mm, cut-out 351 mm.
