Celestion FTR18-4080HDX: 18" subwoofer driver with 10.1 mm Xmax and 1000 W AES
The Celestion FTR18-4080HDX is the long-throw variant among Celestion's 18" ferrite woofers in the FTR series. Inside the cast aluminium frame works a 4" round copper wire voice coil on a glass-fibre former that handles 1000 W AES or 2000 W programme. Sensitivity is 95 dB and the stated response runs from 30 to 2500 Hz. Compared with its sibling, the FTR18-4080FD, the HDX trades a little efficiency for more linear excursion: 10.1 mm Xmax with a double suspension.
The Thiele-Small parameters paint a different picture from the FD: Fs is 39.2 Hz, Qts 0.429 and Vas 174.88 l. This is a motor with less electrical damping (BL 21.29 Tm at Re 5 Ω) that delivers a different response in vented boxes and copes well with DSP equalisation. The glass-loaded paper cone carries a weather-resistant impregnation, the cloth surround is sealed and the magnet system is vented. Moving mass is 171.8 g.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 84, both enclosure types are open. The bass reflex guide value is large at 231 l tuned to 35 Hz, but in return f3 sits around 33 Hz. If you can accommodate the volume, you get a subwoofer with proper extension and high power handling. The sealed variant comes out at about 102 l with fc 65 Hz; combined with the large Xmax and DSP equalisation at the bottom end, that is a serious option for installations where well-damped, transient-accurate bass matters more than the last decibel of efficiency. Check the approximations with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
The role is the bass band in any case: subwoofer under top cabinets or the LF section of a 3-way system, with the crossover set correspondingly low. The driver is 205 mm deep and needs a 416 mm cut-out.
What to look out for
- Re 5 Ω at 8 Ω nominal: run it from 8 Ω outputs, amplifier rated 1000 to 2000 W.
- Xmax 10.1 mm: more excursion headroom than the FTR18-4080FD, at slightly lower sensitivity.
- Qts 0.429: tolerates sealed boxes and DSP equalisation better than more tightly tuned drivers.
- 9.8 kg, mounting depth 205 mm, cut-out 416 mm.
- Le 1.79 mH: of no consequence for subwoofer duty.
Frequently asked questions
FD or HDX: which 18" Celestion suits my project?
The FD, with its lower resonance and higher sensitivity, is the efficiency specialist for large vented boxes. The HDX offers more excursion with 10.1 mm Xmax and more enclosure freedom with Qts 0.429, for example sealed with DSP. On a tight amplifier budget take the FD, in DSP-based systems the HDX.
Does the FTR18-4080HDX work in a vented box smaller than 231 l?
Yes, with the usual consequences: tuning and f3 rise and the response gains a slight hump before roll-off. For rental PA subwoofers that is often acceptable. Run the volume through the enclosure calculator and set a high-pass below the tuning frequency.
What amplifier power makes sense?
Continuous rating is 1000 W AES, programme rating 2000 W. An amplifier in that range into 8 Ω with a limiter is the right choice. Because the HDX delivers 95 dB, it needs slightly more power than the FD for the same level.
