Celestion FTX0617: 6.5" coaxial with dual-ferrite motor and 100° HF coverage
The Celestion FTX0617 is a 6.5" coaxial driver in which a dual-ferrite motor serves as the common drive for cone and HF unit. The Kevlar-reinforced paper cone sits in a cast aluminium chassis and carries a 1.4" voice coil of edge-wound copper-clad aluminium wire on a glass-fibre former. The HF unit with polyimide diaphragm radiates over a nominal 100°; a demodulation ring reduces distortion, and an HF repair kit is available.
The headline figures of 40 W AES, 103 dB and 1,500 to 20,000 Hz belong to the HF section, whose continuous rating is given as 80 W. The LF section is described by Fs 100 Hz, Qts 0.738, Vas 7.37 l, BL 6.59 Tm against 11.6 g of moving mass and 3.5 mm Xmax. The high Qts is not unusual for a ferrite coaxial in this class and determines the enclosure type. The driver weighs 3 kg, the mounting depth is 93 mm and the cutout 150 mm.
Use and enclosure
The recommended crossover is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB per octave, well above the HF section's lower limit of 1,500 Hz. For the cone, with Qts 0.738 there is no sensible bass reflex alignment; the driver belongs in a sealed enclosure, where the high Qts yields a balanced alignment without a port. The right volume is calculated with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio, and at this Qts it tends to be generous. In three-way systems the FTX0617 works in a sealed midrange chamber above a woofer.
With 100° coverage the driver is meant for wide nearfield coverage: ceiling speakers, wall installations in hospitality and conference rooms, background music and small monitors where the coaxial arrangement gives an even image across the listening window. You will find the Thiele-Small parameters in the driver database; the manufacturer page is linked.
What to look out for
- 100° nominal HF coverage: wide dispersion, good for ceiling and wall installation.
- Crossover 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/octave recommended: do not load the HF section below that.
- Qts 0.738: sealed enclosure, no bass reflex.
- Mounting depth 93 mm, cutout 150 mm, 3 kg: fits shallow installation boxes.
- Xmax 3.5 mm: use a high-pass, leave low frequencies to the subwoofer.
Frequently asked questions
Why no vented box?
With Qts 0.738 the cone is so softly damped that a port produces no sensible alignment; the reproduction would be boomy and uneven in the upper bass. Sealed, by contrast, the high Qts gives a benign alignment without extra components, and you determine the volume in the enclosure calculator.
How do I set up the crossover?
The recommendation is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB per octave. Since the HF section at 103 dB is considerably louder than the cone, you need an L-pad in the HF branch to match levels. The cone's inductance of 0.27 mH is low and barely interferes at the crossover.
Which rooms is the 100° coverage meant for?
For wide, close coverage: ceilings, walls, counters, small conference rooms. In reverberant rooms with long throw a narrower-dispersion coaxial is the better choice, because it puts less energy onto the room surfaces.
