Celestion FTX0820: 8" coaxial with shared ferrite motor and 103 dB for compact monitors
The Celestion FTX0820 is an 8" coaxial driver from the FTX series in a cast aluminium chassis. Low- and high-frequency voice coils share a dual-ferrite motor; the HF section uses a polyimide diaphragm and a demodulation ring to keep distortion down. The Kevlar-loaded paper cone sits in a polyimide surround, and the 1.4" LF voice coil is wound edgewise with copper wire on a glass-fibre former.
Within the coaxial category, the FTX0820 is built for high sensitivity from a small box: 103 dB, 40 W AES (80 W continuous) and a Qts of 0.279 at an Fs of 78.8 Hz. That is the recipe for a compact two-way monitor or near-field PA, not for deep bass. The HF section with 100° nominal coverage extends to 20,000 Hz, and a repair kit is available for the tweeter unit.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 254 the driver clearly belongs in a bass-reflex cabinet or on a horn; a sealed box leaves little low-end. As a guide value, the reflex volume is around 5 l tuned near 104 Hz, giving an f3 around 122 Hz. Sealed, the guide is about 2.4 l with fc at 200 Hz. Both are approximations from the Thiele-Small parameters; the exact alignment is best worked out with the 42.audio enclosure calculator.
The recommended crossover is 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct. Do not run the tweeter lower, because its usable range only starts at 1,500 Hz. For a floor monitor or delay line that hands over to a subwoofer at the f3 of 122 Hz, the driver fits well; a high-pass below the tuning frequency protects the 4 mm Xmax.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal (Re 5.85 Ω): works with any amplifier, no need for more than 80 W continuous.
- Mounting depth 123 mm, cutout 187 mm: fits shallow monitor cabinets.
- 4.1 kg due to the dual-ferrite motor, but only one magnet system for both ways.
- Xmax 4 mm: plan a high-pass below the tuning frequency or the woofer will bottom out.
