Celestion FTX1025: 10" coaxial with 104 dB and Qts 0.44 for monitors and installation

A 10" driver that radiates everything from 1,000 to 20,000 Hz from a single point: the Celestion FTX1025 combines a woofer with an HF compression driver on a shared dual-ferrite motor. Both voice coils use the same magnet system, which saves weight and inevitably puts the acoustic centres on one axis. The chassis is cast aluminium, the 1.4" LF voice coil sits on a glass-fibre former and is wound edgewise with copper-clad aluminium wire.

Compared with the 8" format of the series, the FTX1025 with Qts 0.44 and Vas 25.85 l is far more forgiving in a cabinet: Fs 71.5 Hz, Xmax 5 mm and 104 dB sensitivity at 40 W AES (80 W continuous). The HF section with polyimide diaphragm and demodulation ring covers a nominal 100°. That makes it the choice when a coaxial needs more low-end than an 8" can deliver without going to 12" cabinet dimensions.

Use and enclosure

The EBP of 137 points towards bass reflex. Guide value: around 37 l net volume tuned to 63 Hz gives an f3 around 59 Hz. If you prefer a sealed box, you end up at about 16 l with fc at 115 Hz; that is the version for a monitor that hands over to a subwoofer anyway. Both values are approximations from the classic formulas and can be fine-tuned with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

Celestion places the crossover between the two ways at 2,000 Hz with 12 dB/oct. The tweeter is specified from 1,000 Hz, so a filter at 2,000 Hz leaves an octave of safety margin. With 104 dB and 10" of cone area, the FTX1025 suits stage monitors, ceiling speakers in large rooms and two-way installation boxes where point-source radiation matters more than maximum level.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, Re 5.42 Ω: an amplifier delivering 40 to 80 W into 8 Ω is enough.
  • Mounting depth 123 mm with a 235 mm cutout: shallow enough for wedge monitors.
  • 4.5 kg total weight, one magnet system for both ways.
  • Xmax 5 mm and Fs 71.5 Hz: set a high-pass below the tuning frequency.
  • Repair kit available for the HF section, diaphragm replacement without swapping the driver.

Frequently asked questions

How does the FTX1025 differ from the 8" model in the FTX series?

More cone area and a higher Qts of 0.44 deliver more low-end in a reflex cabinet: the f3 guide value is 59 Hz. In return you need considerably more volume at around 37 l and a larger cutout of 235 mm.

Does the FTX1025 work in a sealed box?

Yes, with about 16 l and an fc of 115 Hz. That gives a tight mid-range coaxial for a satellite system with subwoofer. For full-range use, bass reflex is the better choice.

Which crossover does the FTX1025 need?

A two-way filter at 2,000 Hz, at least 12 dB/oct. Active via DSP you can additionally compensate the time offset between HF horn and cone; passively, the shared axis already delivers a coherent result.
