Celestion FTX1225: 12" coaxial with 60 W AES, 1.75" coil and Fs 47.3 Hz for full-range use
If a two-way box is to consist of a single driver, the LF section needs real cone area. The Celestion FTX1225 provides it: a 12" Kevlar-loaded paper cone, Fs 47.3 Hz, Vas 84.59 l and 6 mm Xmax. The 1.75" voice coil of edgewise-wound copper-clad aluminium wire sits on a glass-fibre former and handles 60 W AES, 120 W continuous.
As with all FTX models, a dual-ferrite system drives both voice coils. The HF compression driver with polyimide diaphragm and demodulation ring radiates with 90° nominal coverage, slightly narrower than the smaller models in the series, which suits a 12" box used at greater listening distance. 104 dB sensitivity and a cast aluminium chassis complete the picture. A BL of 14 Tm at Qts 0.396 yields a motor that stays controlled in a reflex cabinet.
Use and enclosure
EBP 108: the threshold where bass reflex becomes more sensible than sealed. The guide value for a reflex cabinet is 89 l at fb 46 Hz with an f3 around 45 Hz; that is a genuine full-range two-way without a mandatory subwoofer. Sealed, you get by with around 39 l, with fc then at 84 Hz. The values are approximations; verify the alignment with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
Crossover per manufacturer recommendation: 2,000 Hz at 12 dB/oct., with the HF section rated from 1,000 Hz. A 12" cone already beams noticeably at 2,000 Hz, and the horn's 90° coverage picks that up nicely. Typical applications: stage monitors with low-end extension, small full-range PA for speech and acoustic music, installations that call for a point source.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω with Re 5.39 Ω: amplifier between 60 and 120 W into 8 Ω.
- Mounting depth 168 mm, cutout 286 mm: the cabinet must be deep enough.
- 5.9 kg due to the dual-ferrite motor, cast aluminium chassis.
- Xmax 6 mm at Fs 47.3 Hz: in the 89 l reflex cabinet set a high-pass below 46 Hz.
- Repair kit available for the HF section.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FTX1225 enough as the only driver in a full-range box?
Yes: with f3 around 45 Hz in the 89 l reflex cabinet and 104 dB, the driver covers everything from bass to 20,000 Hz on its own. For bass-heavy music at high level a subwoofer still makes sense, because 6 mm Xmax is limited.
How much amplifier power does the FTX1225 need?
60 W AES or 120 W continuous into 8 Ω. An amplifier in this class with a clean high-pass is more useful than power reserves that push the woofer beyond Xmax.
Which crossover frequency and slope?
2,000 Hz at 12 dB/oct. is the recommendation. With 24 dB/oct. active you can bring the tweeter a little closer to its lower limit of 1,000 Hz, but then you have to keep an eye on the cone's directivity at the crossover.
