Celestion H1SC-8050: short 1" screw-on horn in ABS for compact two-way cabinets
On a screw-on horn the compression driver sits with its 1" thread directly in the horn throat – no flange, no bolts, mounted in seconds. That is exactly how the Celestion H1SC-8050 is built. At 88 mm mounting depth it is the shorter of the two H1SC horns at 42.audio and weighs just 0.2 kg, because the body is moulded from reinforced ABS. For small cabinets where every centimetre behind the baffle counts, that is a tangible advantage.
Short horns have clear physical characteristics: they load the driver only from higher frequencies upwards and give up pattern control at the low end earlier than long horns do. In return they are light, easy to fit into a cabinet and reliably focus the range where speech and vocals have their presence. If you set the crossover to the mid-woofer high enough and choose a driver with adequate headroom, the H1SC-8050 delivers clean treble in a very compact box.
Use and enclosure
The H1SC-8050 makes sense wherever a 1" screw-on driver has to work in little space: small full-range tops, delay speakers, speech reinforcement, compact active monitors or near-field wedges. Matching drivers are the Celestion compression drivers with a 1" throat, for instance in the CDX1 series – the screw-on version is essential, since a bolt-on driver cannot be attached here. With such a short horn the crossover frequency should be set on the high side; the driver defines the lower limit, and a steep slope gives it additional protection.
Mounting needs no more than a cut-out in the baffle; the horn's front plate is screwed on, then the driver is threaded in from behind. At 0.2 kg you need no extra bracing in the cabinet, and even thin baffles carry the horn without trouble.
What to look out for
- 1" screw-on throat – only for threaded drivers, not for bolt-on flanges
- Just 88 mm mounting depth, suited to shallow and small cabinets
- 0.2 kg, reinforced ABS – light and hard-wearing
- Short horn: keep the crossover to the mid-woofer high and steep
Frequently asked questions
Does every 1" compression driver fit the H1SC-8050?
Only drivers with a 1" screw thread. Celestion offers such drivers in the CDX1 series; make sure you order the screw-on variant. Flange drivers belong on the Celestion H1 horns with bolt-on mounting.
How does it differ from the longer H1SC horn?
Both are 1" screw-on horns in ABS. The H1SC-8050 is markedly shorter and lighter at 88 mm, the longer sister model therefore usable with a lower crossover. If space allows and you want to cross lower, the longer horn has the edge.
How low can I cross over with this horn?
That depends on the driver, but a horn only 88 mm long loads the driver from a relatively high frequency. Plan the crossover well above the driver's resonance and use a steep filter; the driver database at 42.audio helps you match it to the mid-woofer.
Celestion H1SC-8050: manufacturer, spellings and classification
