Celestion H1SC-9040: 1" screw-on horn, 145 mm long, for a lower crossover
Between a shallow waveguide and a full-size PA horn sits the Celestion H1SC-9040: a horn with a 1" screw-on throat and 145 mm mounting depth, moulded from reinforced ABS and at 0.23 kg so light it barely loads the baffle. The compression driver threads straight into the horn throat – the simplest and quickest way of joining driver and horn.
Why length matters: a horn controls directivity only as long as its mouth dimensions are large enough relative to the wavelength. More length allows a larger mouth for the same flare angle and therefore pattern control down to lower frequencies. At the same time the longer horn loading relieves the driver around the crossover, because the diaphragm works against a higher radiation resistance there and needs less excursion for the same level. The H1SC-9040 exploits this advantage without demanding the depth of a flange-mount horn.
Use and enclosure
The horn is intended for two-way systems with a 1" screw-on driver in which the tweeter is to cover not just the top end but also the presence region from the crossover to the mid-woofer upwards – tops with mid-sized woofers, stage wedges or installation speakers, for example. Celestion offers suitable drivers with a 1" throat in the CDX1 series; you need the screw-on variant. The crossover frequency is dictated by the driver, and with 145 mm of horn length you have more room downwards than with a short waveguide.
In the cabinet: cut-out in the baffle, horn screwed on from the front, driver threaded in from behind. Behind the baffle you need the 145 mm plus the length of the driver. Make sure the driver housing does not touch the woofer magnet, so no vibration is transmitted.
What to look out for
- 1" threaded screw-on throat, no bolt-on flange
- 145 mm mounting depth – more length than a waveguide, less than a flange horn
- 0.23 kg, reinforced ABS, no bracing needed in the cabinet
- Longer horn: headroom for a lower crossover if the driver allows it
Frequently asked questions
H1SC-9040 or the shorter H1SC horn – which should I choose?
At 145 mm the H1SC-9040 is longer and gives more pattern control and driver relief at a lower crossover. The shorter sister model is the pick when depth is tight. At the same crossover frequency the longer horn is usually the more relaxed solution.
Which drivers fit the H1SC-9040?
Compression drivers with a 1" throat and screw thread. From Celestion these are the screw-on versions of the CDX1 series; bolt-on drivers do not fit, for those there are the H1 horns with flange mounting.
Do I need equalisation for the horn?
Almost every horn and compression driver combination rolls off towards high frequencies, and you compensate for that in the crossover or the DSP. Measure horn and driver in the finished cabinet before you finalise the crossover – that also gets the transition to the mid-woofer right.
