Celestion PowerProX18: 18" woofer with 1200 W AES, demodulation ring and 97 dB
The Celestion PowerProX18 is an 18" ferrite woofer that Celestion positions above the FTR series: more power handling, more effort in the motor, more weight. 1200 W AES (2400 W programme), 97 dB sensitivity and a stated response of 35 to 1000 Hz describe a driver intended for subwoofers in touring and fixed installations. The cast aluminium frame houses a 4" round copper wire voice coil on a glass-fibre former.
Three design features set it apart from simpler eighteens. First, an aluminium demodulation ring in the magnet system that suppresses the flux modulation caused by coil movement and thereby lowers harmonic and intermodulation distortion. Second, a double suspension laminated with polysiloxane, which makes cone motion more symmetrical and improves stability over the driver's lifetime. Third, dynamic airflow venting, whose effect Celestion quantifies as an average voice coil temperature 20 °C lower. Add a glass-loaded cellulose cone with a double-sided water-repellent coating and a sealed cloth surround. Fs 34.8 Hz, Qts 0.379, Vas 188.9 l, BL 24.38 Tm and Xmax 9.5 mm complete the picture.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 81 permits both enclosure types. For a PA subwoofer, bass reflex is the norm: guide value 175 l net volume, tuned to 35 Hz, with f3 also around 35 Hz. That is a standard 18" bass cabinet in which the PowerProX18 fully exploits its power handling. Sealed, it would be about 76 l with fc 65 Hz, a solution for installations with DSP equalisation where transient accuracy takes precedence over maximum level. Verify the approximations with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
With a moving mass of 230 g and BL 24.38 Tm, the motor is designed for control at high level. Run it as a subwoofer with a low crossover; the stated 1000 Hz upper limit is a range boundary, not an operating suggestion. Installation requires 225 mm of depth and a 414 mm cut-out.
What to look out for
- 1200 W AES at 8 Ω: amplifiers between 1200 and 2400 W into 8 Ω, with limiter and high-pass.
- 13.2 kg: a heavy driver, so design the cabinet structure and carrying handles accordingly.
- Mounting depth 225 mm, cut-out 414 mm.
- Aluminium demodulation ring: lower distortion at large excursion.
- Xmax 9.5 mm with Mms 230 g: high displacement, but not an extreme long-throw design.
Frequently asked questions
What distinguishes the PowerProX18 from the FTR18 models?
The PowerProX18 handles more power at 1200 W AES than the FTR eighteens and has a more elaborate motor with demodulation ring and laminated double suspension. In return it is bigger and heavier at 13.2 kg and 225 mm mounting depth. For touring subwoofers under sustained high load it is the more consistent choice.
Which enclosure type fits?
Bass reflex at around 175 l tuned to 35 Hz is the guide value for full extension. With less volume available you can build smaller and let f3 rise; sealed in about 76 l it works with DSP equalisation. The enclosure calculator handles the fine tuning.
How much amplifier power does the PowerProX18 need?
Reckon with 1200 to 2400 W into 8 Ω per driver. At 97 dB it already delivers high level with less power, but you only use its full potential with an appropriately sized amplifier and a limiter that keeps below the 2400 W programme rating.
