Celestion TF0510MR: closed-back 5" midrange with 93 dB for 400 to 8000 Hz
The Celestion TF0510MR is not an ordinary five-inch driver but a closed-back midrange unit: the pressed steel frame is covered at the rear, so the driver brings its own chamber with it. That removes the separate midrange compartment an open midrange needs inside the cabinet, and the TF0510MR can be mounted straight into the baffle of a 3-way box without bass pressure from the LF volume acting on the back of its cone.
Technically it uses a ferrite magnet, a 1" voice coil on a polyimide former and a Kevlar-loaded paper cone with an impregnated paper surround. Sensitivity is 93 dB, power handling 30 W AES (60 W programme) and the response covers 400 to 8000 Hz. The resonance frequency of 482 Hz is a consequence of the closed design: the small air chamber behind the cone adds stiffness and pushes Fs upwards. Re 7.87 Ω and Le 0.2 mH complete the electrical data. At 1.2 kg and 68 mm mounting depth it is compact enough for columns and slim cabinets.
Use and enclosure
As the midrange in a 3-way system, the TF0510MR covers the band between a woofer and a tweeter. The lower crossover must sit well above the 482 Hz resonance so the cone is not driven around its resonance; read the manufacturer's 400 Hz lower limit as an absolute boundary, not as a crossover frequency. At the top, the response extends to 8000 Hz, so the hand-over to a dome or a small compression driver can be placed flexibly.
Since no enclosure volume needs tuning, Thiele-Small parameters such as Qts and Vas are absent. Installation is via the 117 mm cut-out, and the closed rear needs only the 68 mm depth plus a little clearance inside the cabinet. For speech columns and installation loudspeakers with several midrange units arranged vertically, this design is ideal because no chambers need to be partitioned.
What to look out for
- Closed rear: no midrange chamber required, mount straight into the baffle.
- Fs 482 Hz: choose the crossover well above it, 400 Hz is the absolute lower limit.
- 30 W AES at 8 Ω: small amplifiers suffice for midrange duty, 60 W programme is the maximum.
- Mounting depth 68 mm, cut-out 117 mm, 1.2 kg.
- Le 0.2 mH: low inductance, straightforward crossover design up to 8000 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate enclosure compartment for the TF0510MR?
No. The rear is closed and the driver brings its own volume. Cut the 117 mm hole in the baffle and screw it in; the LF volume behind the baffle does not affect it.
Where should the lower crossover frequency sit?
Well above the 482 Hz resonance, with a steep slope. The closer the crossover gets to Fs, the more the impedance rises in the hand-over region and the more distortion results. The 400 Hz figure in the specifications is a boundary, not a suggestion.
What advantage does the TF0510MR have over the open TF0510?
The closed-back MR saves the midrange compartment, has slightly higher sensitivity at 93 dB and is intended for pure midrange duty. The open TF0510, in return, works considerably lower and can also serve as a mid/bass driver in small 2-way cabinets.
