Celestion TF0818: 8" mid/bass driver in pressed steel frame with 94 dB and 100 W AES
The Celestion TF0818 is the eight-inch driver of the TF series: a woofer with a pressed steel frame, ferrite magnet and 1.75" voice coil on a polyimide former, rated at 100 W AES (200 W programme) with 94 dB sensitivity. The response spans 70 to 6000 Hz, which puts it in the typical role of a mid/bass driver in compact 2-way cabinets, installation speakers and small monitors.
The Kevlar-loaded paper cone sits in a sealed cloth surround with a single suspension. The motor delivers BL 12.95 Tm at Re 6.72 Ω, and the low moving mass of 19.6 g is the reason for the respectable efficiency. Fs 100 Hz, Qts 0.429 and Vas 9.44 l indicate a driver for small enclosures that has enough excursion for mid/bass duty with 5 mm Xmax but is not meant to deliver deep bass. Le is 0.75 mH. At 2.3 kg and 99 mm mounting depth the TF0818 stays light and compact, an advantage over the cast-frame eights of the FTR series when weight and price matter.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 203 points unambiguously to bass reflex. The guide value is 12 l tuned to 90 Hz with an f3 around 85 Hz. That is a small box that reproduces speech, vocals and acoustic instruments cleanly but needs a subwoofer for kick and bass. Sealed, the volume comes out at about 5.5 l with fc 165 Hz, suitable as a midrange compartment in a 3-way system where the TF0818 covers the band above that resonance. Work out the exact alignment with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
With a 6000 Hz upper limit, the eight can be combined with a 1" compression driver in a 2-way cabinet; matching horns are found in Celestion's horns and waveguides category. The crossover frequency follows the HF driver and the directivity of the 8" cone. The cut-out is 183 mm.
What to look out for
- 100 W AES at 8 Ω: amplifiers delivering 100 to 200 W into 8 Ω, with a high-pass below the tuning frequency.
- 2.3 kg and 99 mm mounting depth: light and shallow, good for portable and ceiling-mounted cabinets.
- Xmax 5 mm: sufficient for mid/bass, add a subwoofer for deep bass.
- Fs 100 Hz, Vas 9.44 l: small vented boxes around 12 l as a guide value.
- Pressed steel frame: cheaper and lighter than cast aluminium, no drawback for installation use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the TF0818 and the cast-frame eight of the FTR series?
The TF0818 has a pressed steel frame, a 1.75" coil and 100 W AES at 94 dB; the FTR model brings a cast frame, a larger coil and higher power handling. For installations and small cabinets at moderate power, the TF0818 is the lighter and less expensive choice.
Is the TF0818 enough for a small stage monitor?
For vocals and speech, yes: 94 dB and 100 W AES give usable level in the near field. Kick drum monitoring is not its job, as it lacks the excursion and extension. A high-pass below 90 Hz protects the driver in a vented box.
Which enclosure is the right choice?
Bass reflex at around 12 l tuned to 90 Hz is the guide value for a small 2-way cabinet. As a midrange in a 3-way system, use a sealed compartment around 5.5 l. Both figures come from the approximation formulas and should be refined with the enclosure calculator.
