Celestion TF1020: 10" mid/bass driver with 97 dB for compact two-way cabinets
The Celestion TF1020 is a 10" mid/bass driver from the TF series with a ferrite magnet, pressed steel chassis and a 2" round-wire copper voice coil on a polyimide former. The cone is Kevlar-reinforced paper with a cloth-sealed surround. Rated at 150 W AES (300 W programme) with 97 dB sensitivity and a usable band of 60 to 5500 Hz, it is built for small sound reinforcement cabinets in which one cone has to cover everything up to the handover to the horn.
Its parameters set it apart within the category: Fs 69.4 Hz, Qts 0.323 and a small Vas of 28.75 l give an EBP of 187, a clear pointer towards small vented boxes or horn loading rather than deep bass. The low inductance of 0.6 mH keeps the motor well behaved through the midrange, which is what makes the stated 5500 Hz upper limit realistic. At 3.7 kg and 110 mm mounting depth the driver stays light and shallow.
Use and enclosure
The Thiele-Small parameters suggest, as a guideline, a vented enclosure of about 17 l tuned to 81 Hz, giving an f3 of roughly 88 Hz. Sealed, the guideline is 7.6 l with fc at 152 Hz – useful as a midrange compartment in a three-way design, too thin in the bass as a standalone box. Both are approximations; the exact alignment is a job for the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Typical use is a compact two-way cabinet or stage monitor with a compression driver and horn from the Celestion range, relieved by a subwoofer or at least a high-pass filter. Cross over to the tweeter well below 5500 Hz so that the directivity of the 10" cone and the driver's power handling line up.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.45 Ω: an amplifier of around 300 W into 8 Ω matches the programme rating.
- Xmax 4 mm: not a deep-bass driver, plan a high-pass or a subwoofer.
- Mounting depth 110 mm, cutout 229 mm, 3.7 kg – fits shallow cabinets.
- Ferrite motor with BL 14.1 Tm and Mms 31.1 g: a light, quick cone for the midrange.
Frequently asked questions
Is the TF1020 enough as the only woofer in a small full-range box?
For speech and moderate music levels, yes, in a vented box of about 17 l with f3 around 88 Hz. For music with real low bass a subwoofer belongs underneath; the 4 mm Xmax is the limit here.
Which amplifier suits the TF1020?
The TF1020 handles 150 W AES and 300 W programme into 8 Ω. An amplifier of that order is sufficient; more power only adds a safety margin if a clean high-pass protects against mechanical overload.
Can I use the TF1020 as a midrange in a three-way system?
Yes, that is a sensible role. A sealed midrange compartment of about 7.6 l gives a resonance at 152 Hz; place the lower crossover well above that and the upper one below 5500 Hz.
