Celestion TF1225: 12" woofer with 250 W AES for two-way PA cabinets
Anyone planning a classic 12" two-way box will run into the Celestion TF1225 sooner or later. The ferrite woofer from the TF series sits in a pressed steel chassis, uses a 2.5" round-wire copper voice coil on a polyimide former and carries a Kevlar-reinforced paper cone with a cloth-sealed surround. 250 W AES or 500 W programme and 97 dB sensitivity form a solid base for this class.
The working band runs from 50 to 4000 Hz. The parameters – Fs 55.6 Hz, Qts 0.37, Vas 67.27 l, BL 14.32 Tm with only 48.5 g moving mass – give an EBP of 132. So this is a vented-box driver that combines useful efficiency with a motor that still tracks cleanly in the midrange. Le of 0.86 mH is low enough to reach 4000 Hz without a steep top-end roll-off. Weight 4.1 kg, mounting depth 130 mm.
Use and enclosure
Vented guideline: about 58 l tuned to 57 Hz, f3 around 58 Hz. That is a manageable volume for a full-range box that has to work without a subwoofer as long as the bass level demand stays moderate. Sealed, the guideline is 25 l with fc at 106 Hz – fine when a subwoofer takes over below and the box has to stay small. For the actual alignment, use the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Set the upper crossover to the compression driver well below 4000 Hz, where the 12" cone is not yet beaming strongly. Pick horn and driver from Celestion's horns and waveguides category to match the driver's throat size. With 4.5 mm Xmax a high-pass below the tuning frequency is mandatory when running at full power.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal (Re 5.08 Ω); an amplifier of around 500 W into 8 Ω matches the programme rating.
- Xmax 4.5 mm: protect below the tuning frequency with a high-pass.
- Mounting depth 130 mm, cutout 283 mm, 4.1 kg.
- Ferrite magnet, 2.5" coil: standard format, a good replacement in existing cabinets.
- Qts 0.37 and EBP 132 point to vented boxes, not to sealed boxes with extension.
Frequently asked questions
TF1225 or TF1225e – what is the difference?
The TF1225e is designed for more low-frequency extension: higher Xmax, stronger motor, but slightly lower sensitivity and a narrower band at the top. The TF1225 is the more balanced choice when one driver has to run all the way up to the tweeter crossover.
How big does the vented box for the TF1225 need to be?
As a guideline about 58 l tuned to 57 Hz, giving an f3 around 58 Hz. Smaller works, but the low-frequency cutoff rises; the enclosure calculator shows you the effect.
Which amplifier makes sense for the TF1225?
250 W AES, 500 W programme into 8 Ω. An amplifier with about 500 W into 8 Ω per channel uses the driver fully; a limiter or high-pass matters more than the last few watts.
