Celestion TF1225e: 12" woofer with 5.25 mm Xmax for extended low end

The Celestion TF1225e is the low-frequency-oriented version of the 12" woofer from the TF series. The e stands for the extended response at the bottom: 300 W AES (600 W programme), 96 dB sensitivity and a working band of 50 to 3000 Hz. Compared with the base model the motor has been strengthened – BL 17.66 Tm – and linear excursion raised to 5.25 mm Xmax. The 2.5" voice coil is edge-wound copper, which packs more conductor into the gap and raises power handling.

Mechanically it stays with the pressed steel chassis, ferrite magnet, Kevlar-reinforced paper cone and cloth-sealed surround. Thiele-Small parameters: Fs 52.6 Hz, Qts 0.333, Vas 67.71 l, Mms 54 g, Re 6.42 Ω, Le 1.32 mH. The higher inductance explains the upper limit of 3000 Hz; this is more of a woofer than a mid/bass driver. Weight 4.4 kg, mounting depth 139 mm.

Use and enclosure

An EBP of 143 points to a vented alignment. Guideline: about 43 l tuned to 59 Hz, with f3 around 64 Hz. That is more compact than the TF1225 because the stronger motor pulls Qts down. Sealed, the guideline is 19 l with fc at 112 Hz. Work out the exact alignment including port dimensions with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

Sensible applications: the bass section of a two-way box whose tweeter can cross over low enough, or a small subwoofer or woofer in a three-way layout with a separate midrange. Place the upper crossover well below 3000 Hz. With 5.25 mm Xmax and 600 W programme the TF1225e copes with more bass content than the TF1225, but a high-pass below the tuning frequency still makes sense.

What to look out for

  • Xmax 5.25 mm and BL 17.66 Tm: built for bass content, not for midrange finesse.
  • Re 6.42 Ω at 8 Ω nominal; amplifiers of around 600 W into 8 Ω are a good match.
  • Mounting depth 139 mm, cutout 283 mm, weight 4.4 kg.
  • Le 1.32 mH: upper limit 3000 Hz – set the crossover accordingly low.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TF1225e suitable as a subwoofer driver?

For a compact subwoofer within the guideline range – 43 l vented, f3 around 64 Hz – yes. Real low bass below 50 Hz is not what a 12" with 5.25 mm excursion delivers; that is what the TSQ models are for.

How does the TF1225e differ from the TF1225?

More excursion, stronger motor, edge-wound coil and higher power handling, with slightly lower sensitivity and a lower upper frequency limit. If you need bass content, take the e model; if you want the midrange as well, take the base model.

Which amplifier suits the TF1225e?

300 W AES, 600 W programme. An amplifier with around 600 W into 8 Ω uses the driver fully. Make sure a high-pass sits below the box tuning so excursion does not run away below fb.
