Celestion TF1230S: 12" woofer with 3" voice coil for portable two-way systems
The TF1230S is Celestion's 12" ferrite woofer with an enlarged chassis diameter, so it drops into the widespread portable two-way reinforcement cabinets without reworking the baffle or the cutout. If you are repairing or upgrading such a box, this is a driver with 300 W AES, 600 W programme and 96 dB sensitivity across 50 to 4000 Hz.
The voice coil is 3" and edge-wound from copper-clad aluminium wire. That reduces moving mass compared with a pure copper winding of the same size – Mms is 51.1 g – and at the same time improves heat transfer, because the larger coil presents more surface to the magnet structure. The remaining parameters: Fs 60.3 Hz, Qts 0.374, Vas 54.41 l, BL 16.56 Tm, Xmax 4.5 mm, Re 5.98 Ω, Le 0.98 mH. Use and enclosure
Vented guideline: about 49 l tuned to 61 Hz, f3 around 62 Hz – a volume that typical portable 12" cabinets roughly hit. Sealed: 21 l with fc at 114 Hz, more for combination with a subwoofer. An EBP of 143 confirms the vented orientation. Fine-tune with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Place the upper crossover to the compression driver well below 4000 Hz. When fitting it as a replacement, check the 283 mm cutout and 137 mm mounting depth; the 3" coil tolerates continuous party and rental levels better than smaller coils with the same nominal rating.

TF1230S or the more compact 12" base model of the TF series – which one is right?
Both are 12" ferrite woofers up to 4000 Hz. The TF1230S has the larger 3" coil, more power handling and the extended chassis; the base model is more compact and slightly more sensitive. For high continuous levels, take the TF1230S.
