Celestion TFX0412: 4" coaxial driver with 107 dB, waterproof cone and 80° coverage
Small coaxial, high sensitivity: the Celestion TFX0412 is a 4" driver from the TFX series in a pressed steel chassis that is unusually efficient for its size at 107 dB. The treble comes from a rear-mounted compression driver with polyimide diaphragm whose signal is radiated through the cone; a ferrite magnet serves as the common motor for both voice coils.
The cellulose cone is reinforced and waterproof-coated, the surround is polyimide, and the 1" coil former is also polyimide with copper-clad aluminium wire. Power handling: 15 W AES, 30 W continuous. The HF section runs from 2,200 Hz to 20,000 Hz with 80° nominal coverage and a demodulation ring against distortion. At 0.6 kg and 74.2 mm mounting depth, the driver fits where otherwise only full-range units would.
Use and enclosure
There is no bass-reflex guide value for the TFX0412, and that is consistent: Fs 95 Hz, Qts 0.589 and Vas 2.18 l describe a driver for a small sealed enclosure, guide value around 4.9 l with fc at 114 Hz. Below that a subwoofer or bass driver should take over. With Xmax 4 mm and BL 5.4 Tm the coaxial is not built for large excursions; a high-pass at the handover is mandatory.
Crossover to the HF section: 2,500 Hz at 12 dB/oct. The tweeter is rated from 2,200 Hz, so the recommended frequency sits just above it; steeper filters add safety. Applications: compact speech reinforcement, ceiling mounting, small near-field monitors, areas with moisture thanks to the waterproof coating, and satellites in two-way systems with bass support.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω, Re 5.6 Ω: small amplifiers with 15 to 30 W into 8 Ω are sufficient.
- Cutout 102 mm, mounting depth 74.2 mm: fits very shallow enclosures.
- 0.6 kg: pressed steel chassis and one ferrite magnet for both ways.
- Qts 0.589: sealed enclosure, no bass reflex.
- Xmax 4 mm: do not forget the high-pass to the subwoofer.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 4" coaxial with 107 dB good for?
Speech and background sound with little amplifier power: at 107 dB a few watts give decent level. In two-way satellites with subwoofer it handles mid and high frequencies from the fc of 114 Hz upwards.
Sealed or bass reflex for the TFX0412?
Sealed, guide value 4.9 l with fc at 114 Hz. With a Qts of 0.589 a port brings no useful gain, and the driver is not designed for deep bass anyway.
What does the waterproof coating do?
The cellulose cone is sealed against moisture, which extends its life in kitchens, bathrooms or semi-open areas. The pressed steel chassis, however, is not specially protected, so plan the installation with splash water in mind.
