Celestion TFX0515: 5" coaxial with silk dome and neodymium magnet for small monitors
Within the TFX series, the Celestion TFX0515 takes a different route from the compression-driver models: a silk dome tweeter sits at the centre of the 5" cone. That gives the kind of treble you know from dome tweeters, with 100° nominal coverage. The motor is a neodymium magnet, the chassis pressed steel, the cone Kevlar-loaded paper with a silk surround.
The data: 96 dB sensitivity, 10 W AES (20 W continuous), 8 Ω, frequency range 1,400 to 20,000 Hz. The 1" voice coil of round copper wire on a polyimide former delivers, with BL 6.96 Tm and Mms 9.1 g, a motor that is easy to tame in a cabinet at Fs 74 Hz and Qts 0.474. Xmax 3.75 mm is respectable for 5".
Use and enclosure
Bass-reflex guide value: 11 l at fb 61 Hz, f3 around 55 Hz. For a 5" that is a surprisingly deep alignment, but it only works at moderate level because of the 3.75 mm Xmax. Sealed: about 5.3 l with fc at 110 Hz, the better choice as a satellite with subwoofer. The EBP of 147 favours reflex; check both in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
Crossover 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct., the dome is usable from 1,400 Hz. At 96 dB you need less power than with many hi-fi drivers of this size, but do not mistake the 10 W AES for PA power handling. Suitable projects: desktop monitors, surround speakers, small ceiling boxes, compact speakers with point-source character.
