Celestion TN1230: 12" neodymium woofer weighing 2.1 kg with 350 W AES

2.1 kg for a 12" woofer rated at 350 W AES – the Celestion TN1230 from the TN series replaces the ferrite ring with a compact, high-flux dual-magnet neodymium motor. Heat is carried away by a vented cast aluminium heatsink that keeps the 3" round-wire copper voice coil on its polyimide former under control even in continuous use. 700 W programme power and 97 dB sensitivity are the key figures.

The working band of 50 to 4500 Hz makes it a mid/bass driver for two-way cabinets. TSP: Fs 46.6 Hz, Qts 0.35, Qms 4.76, Vas 64.33 l, BL 18.55 Tm, Mms 72.4 g, Xmax 3.75 mm, Re 6.09 Ω, Le 0.99 mH. The EBP of 126 says vented. The relatively high Mms combined with a strong motor gives a low resonance, which helps the bottom end. Pressed steel chassis, Kevlar-reinforced paper cone, cloth-sealed surround, mounting depth 132 mm.

Use and enclosure

Vented guideline: about 47 l tuned to 50 Hz with f3 around 53 Hz. That volume fits a portable box and still reaches down to the lower limit. Sealed: 21 l, fc 94 Hz – for active tops running above a subwoofer. The enclosure calculator on 42.audio supplies the details.

The weight makes the TN1230 an obvious choice for cabinets that are carried, flown or used on stands. Cross over to the compression driver well below 4500 Hz; with 3.75 mm Xmax the rule is a high-pass below fb, and with lots of bass content preferably a subwoofer underneath.

What to look out for

  • Neodymium dual-magnet motor, 2.1 kg: saves noticeable weight per cabinet compared with ferrite.
  • Vented cast aluminium heatsink keeps the 3" coil cool in continuous use.
  • 8 Ω, Re 6.09 Ω; amplifiers of around 700 W into 8 Ω match the programme rating.
  • Xmax 3.75 mm: not a deep-bass driver, plan a high-pass.
  • Cutout 283 mm, mounting depth 132 mm – standard dimensions for 12" boxes.

Frequently asked questions

Why neodymium instead of ferrite when the TF1230S has similar key figures?

Because weight drops considerably with neodymium without sacrificing power handling or sensitivity. That pays off in portable or flown cabinets; for fixed installation ferrite is the simpler choice.

Which enclosure for the TN1230?

Vented with around 47 l tuned to 50 Hz, f3 around 53 Hz. Smaller costs extension; sealed with 21 l only in combination with a subwoofer.

Which amplifier for the TN1230?

350 W AES, 700 W programme into 8 Ω. An amplifier of around 700 W into 8 Ω is a good fit; in an active top with DSP you set high-pass and limiter, and then it may deliver a bit more.
