Celestion Truvox 0820: 8" mid-bass driver with 96 dB and 2" voice coil
An 8" driver with 96 dB sensitivity makes a statement: the Celestion Truvox 0820 goes for efficiency over extension, which makes it a mid-bass unit for compact PA tops, full-range cabinets and replacement duty in existing 8" systems. Power handling is 250 W AES (500 W programme), impedance 8 Ω, working range 70 to 6,000 Hz. The frame is pressed steel with gaskets front and rear, the motor an FEA-optimised ferrite magnet driving a 2" copper voice coil on a polyimide former.
The cellulose cone hangs in a fabric-sealed triple-roll surround that guides the 5 mm of Xmax symmetrically. The parameters: Fs 74.1 Hz, Qts 0.39, Vas 17.25 l, BL 11.51 Tm against Re of 6.06 Ω, and a cone area of 227 cm². The ratio of motor strength to moving mass is high – hence the sensitivity – and Le stays low enough at 0.543 mH for the driver to remain linear into the presence region. At 3 kg the 0820 is light for its class.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 178 is unambiguous: vented or horn-loaded, not sealed, if you want bass. Vented guideline: around 17 l tuned to 73 Hz, with a calculated f3 of 72 Hz. That is the typical size of a compact 8" top or a small monitor. Sealed, the figures come to about 7.5 l with fc at 134 Hz – as a pure midrange in a 3-way design, in its own sealed chamber, that is a clean solution. Settle the exact port length in the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
At the top end the 0820 reaches 6,000 Hz, so it copes well in a 2-way system with a 1" compression driver on a horn; place the crossover well below that upper limit. 96 dB and 8 Ω mean the tweeter can happily be a compression driver, an amplifier of moderate power into 8 Ω is enough, and a dual-driver top (4 Ω) gets properly loud. Mounting depth 94 mm, cutout 184 mm.
What to look out for
- 96 dB at 8 Ω: matches compression drivers without heavy padding
- Mounting depth 94 mm, cutout 184 mm
- Xmax 5 mm: plan a high-pass below the tuning frequency
- Weight 3 kg, ferrite magnet, pressed-steel frame with front and rear gaskets
- 2" voice coil on polyimide, 250 W AES / 500 W programme
Frequently asked questions
Truvox 0820 or a smaller Truvox driver?
The 0820 offers 227 cm² of cone area, 96 dB sensitivity and 250 W AES, which suits louder tops. A smaller driver in the range is the pick when depth and cabinet volume are tight. Compare the figures side by side in the driver database.
Which amplifier makes sense?
Into 8 Ω, a channel in the region of the 250 W AES rating is enough; for a dual-driver 4 Ω load, correspondingly more. More important than power is a high-pass filter that limits excursion below the tuning frequency.
Does it work as a midrange in a 3-way system?
Yes. The sealed guideline is about 7.5 l with fc at 134 Hz, above which it runs linear and efficient at 96 dB. The chamber should be separated from the bass volume and damped.
