Celestion Truvox 1225: 12" woofer with 96 dB, 300 W AES and high Qts for large enclosures
The Celestion Truvox 1225 is a 12" woofer on a pressed-steel frame with a ferrite magnet, designed as a replacement and upgrade driver for 12" mid-bass applications as well as for straightforward PA cabinets and full-range boxes. It handles 300 W AES (600 W programme), delivers 96 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and covers 50 to 4,000 Hz. The glass-fibre reinforced cone hangs in a fabric-sealed triple-roll surround, and the 2.5" voice coil of copper-clad aluminium wire sits on a polyimide former.
The parameters deserve closer attention here than with many other 12" drivers: Qts 0.623 at Fs 60.3 Hz and Vas 54.15 l indicate comparatively soft electrical damping – Qes 0.681, Qms 7.389. Figures like these belong to drivers meant for large enclosures or open baffles, not compact reflex boxes. BL of 13.51 Tm drives 51.4 g of moving mass and 531 cm² of cone area, which explains the high efficiency. Xmax is 4.75 mm, Le 0.68 mH. The CCAW wire keeps the voice coil light, which helps the response up to 4,000 Hz.
Use and enclosure
The Butterworth guideline gives a sealed volume of around 188 l with fc at 68 Hz – that is big, and that is precisely the message: the Truvox 1225 wants room. In a small box the total Q rises to the point where the bass bloats around the in-box resonance. The EBP of 89 does allow a vented design in principle, but at this Qts it pays to simulate in the enclosure calculator on 42.audio before cutting wood. Where the driver becomes genuinely interesting is on open baffles, in large guitar and bass cabinets and in vintage-style designs where a higher Qts is exactly what is wanted.
At the top it works up to 4,000 Hz, which makes it usable in 2-way tops with a 1" compression driver; cross over well below that limit. 8 Ω and 300 W AES are no challenge for any PA amplifier. Mechanically: 284.5 mm cutout, 131.4 mm mounting depth, 4.7 kg, gaskets front and rear for either mounting direction.
