Celestion Truvox 1525: 15" woofer with 96 dB and 400 W AES for large volumes
The Celestion Truvox 1525 is a 15" woofer on a pressed-steel frame with a ferrite magnet, designed as a replacement and upgrade driver for 15" systems and for bass and full-range cabinets that put efficiency ahead of extension. It handles 400 W AES (800 W programme), delivers 96 dB at 8 Ω and works between 40 and 4,000 Hz. Cone: glass-fibre reinforced cellulose in a fabric-sealed triple-roll surround. Voice coil: 2.5" copper-clad aluminium on a polyimide former.
At 4.8 kg the 1525 is remarkably light for a 15" ferrite driver, which comes down to the frame construction and the FEA-optimised, compact magnet assembly. The parameters paint a clear picture: Fs 49 Hz, Qts 0.756, Qms 12.918, Qes 0.803, Vas 135.4 l, BL 14.273 Tm against Re of 6.58 Ω, Sd 855 cm², Xmax 4.75 mm. The high Qms points to low mechanical losses, the high Qts to a motor that holds the cone rather loosely around resonance – typical of drivers that draw their bass from their own resonance on an open baffle or in very large enclosures.
Use and enclosure
There are deliberately no volume guidelines here: with Qts at 0.756, the classic approximation formulas for vented and sealed boxes give no meaningful result, because the total Q in any enclosure always ends up above the Butterworth alignment. The Truvox 1525 therefore belongs in large volumes, on open baffles, or in cabinets where a peak around the in-box resonance is either accepted or corrected by DSP. Classic applications are guitar and bass cabinets, recreations of historic PA designs and high-efficiency projects. Is the Truvox 1525 an open-baffle driver?
Yes, with Qts 0.756, Fs 49 Hz and 855 cm² of cone area it has what it takes to deliver noticeable bass on an open baffle. The high sensitivity of 96 dB helps to compensate for dipole cancellation.
Why is there no vented guideline?
Because at Qts 0.756 the classic approximation formulas produce no usable volume – the driver lies outside their range of validity. That does not make a vented box impossible, but it has to be simulated, for example in the enclosure calculator.
Which amplifier is appropriate?
Into 8 Ω a channel well below the 400 W AES rating is enough, because 96 dB sensitivity keeps the power demand low. A high-pass filter matters more, since 4.75 mm of Xmax is used up quickly at low frequencies.
