Mundorf AMTU160W1.1: large U-series AMT with 4 Ω, 93 dB and crossover from 1,500 Hz
More diaphragm height, lower crossover: the Mundorf AMTU160W1.1 is the larger model in the AMT U series. Its foil sits in a housing of 55 x 175 x 45 mm, and the larger area allows use from 1,500 Hz with a 12 dB/oct. high-pass; at the top the range extends to 28 kHz. Sensitivity is 93 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, impedance is 4 Ω, and the motor uses neodymium.
The physics is straightforward: an air-motion transformer with more folds spreads the air load over more area, each fold travels less, and the strain on the foil at low frequencies drops. That is why the large AMT may take over earlier than the shorter model in the series. The price is stronger vertical directivity, since the 175 mm tall diaphragm behaves like a short line source in the vertical plane. Horizontally, dispersion stays wide. The version without faceplate is meant for a custom bezel or a flush recess.
Use and enclosure
The AMTU160W1.1 fits two-way loudspeakers with larger mid-woofers that should hand over at 1,500 Hz because they start beaming above that, and three-way systems with a cone midrange. Crossing at 1,500 Hz requires at least 12 dB/oct.; with 24 dB/oct. there is headroom for high levels. The vertical directivity demands mounting at ear height, otherwise the treble drops off the listening axis.
The 4 Ω impedance has two consequences. First: 2.83 V into 4 Ω equals 2 W, so sensitivity per watt is lower than the 93 dB voltage sensitivity suggests. Second: in a passive crossover the capacitors come out larger and the inductors smaller than for higher-impedance tweeters, and the amplifier has to drive 4 Ω continuously. Mundorf provides the datasheet as a PDF; at 42.audio you will also find the driver database with the other U-series models and the enclosure calculator for the woofer.
What to look out for
- 4 Ω impedance: amplifier must drive 4 Ω continuously, calculate the crossover with 4 Ω.
- 93 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, which at 4 Ω corresponds to about 2 W input.
- Crossover from 1,500 Hz with at least 12 dB/oct.
- 55 x 175 x 45 mm, tall diaphragm: mount at ear height, upright.
- No faceplate, neodymium magnet.
Frequently asked questions
Why 4 Ω, and what does that mean for the amplifier?
The low impedance comes from the construction of the foil and its conductor tracks. The amplifier has to drive 4 Ω cleanly; in hi-fi that is standard, with small Class D modules it is worth checking the spec sheet. In crossovers with a series resistor the overall impedance rises anyway.
How does it differ from the smaller U-series AMT?
The AMTU160W1.1 has the taller diaphragm, may be crossed lower and has stronger vertical directivity. The smaller model starts higher, radiates wider vertically and is rated at 6 Ω. For larger mid-woofers and a low crossover, the AMTU160W1.1 is the better choice.
Is the AMTU160W1.1 also available with a faceplate?
Yes, as the AMTU160W1.1-R. The driver is the same; the R version adds a faceplate for direct mounting and is correspondingly a little larger.
