Mundorf AMTU80W1.1: AMT tweeter with 94 dB and crossover from 2,000 Hz

With the AMTU80W1.1, Mundorf's AMT U series reaches the point where the tweeter becomes a genuine partner for larger mid-woofers. Sensitivity of 94 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and a usable floor of 2,000 Hz allow a crossover that a small AMT cannot handle cleanly. The element comes without a faceplate and measures 55 mm wide, 95 mm high and 45 mm deep. The motor is a neodymium magnet, impedance is 4 Ω.

The longer foil is the key: more area means less excursion per level, hence less distortion through the transition and more headroom at high volume. At the same time the AMT physics stay unchanged: the pleated diaphragm squeezes air out faster than it moves itself, moving mass stays low and the spectrum extends to 31,000 Hz. Anyone who has compared an AMT with a dome knows the difference on transients and fine detail; the AMTU80W1.1 brings that quality with more level capability.

Use and enclosure

The AMTU80W1.1 makes sense wherever the crossover should sit lower than with ordinary tweeters: 2-way speakers with larger mid-woofers that would beam above the transition, or 3-way systems in which the midrange should be unloaded early. The 2,000 Hz count as the floor with 12 dB per octave; for continuous use at high levels I would either cross slightly higher or filter at 18 to 24 dB per octave.

The foil stands upright, so the AMTU80W1.1 radiates wide horizontally and clearly focused vertically. That reduces floor and ceiling reflections, but it requires the tweeter axis to be at ear height. Since there is no faceplate, plan the cut-out so the foil ends up flush with the baffle, and chamfer the edges to be safe.

What to look out for

  • 94 dB sensitivity at 4 Ω: plan for a voltage divider in most passive designs.
  • Floor at 2,000 Hz with 12 dB per octave: crossing lower is out, filtering steeper helps.
  • No faceplate, 55 x 95 x 45 mm: provide your own recess or adapter.
  • Narrow vertical dispersion: mount the tweeter at ear height.
  • Neodymium magnet: low weight despite the large foil area.

Frequently asked questions

Which mid-woofers is the AMTU80W1.1 intended for?

For drivers that no longer radiate cleanly above 2,000 Hz or whose beaming becomes too strong there. With a crossover just above that floor and a steep slope, such a mid-woofer can be unloaded without pushing the AMT to its limit.

Do I need a special amplifier for 4 Ω?

No, most power amplifiers cope with 4 Ω. What matters more is that the crossover is calculated for 4 Ω and that you match the AMT's 94 dB to the level of the mid-woofer, otherwise the treble is too forward.

What is the difference between the AMTU80W1.1 and the faceplate version?

The transducer is the same: 94 dB, 4 Ω, 2,000 Hz to 31,000 Hz. The version without plate is slightly more compact and leaves you free with recess and front design, while the faceplate version saves the bracket and mounts faster.
