Mundorf AMTU80W1.1-R: AMT tweeter with rectangular faceplate, 94 dB, from 2,000 Hz
The Mundorf AMTU80W1.1-R combines the largest AMT element of the U series in this range with a rectangular faceplate. Outer dimensions are 61 mm wide, 101 mm high and 48 mm mounting depth. The cut-out in the baffle is therefore rectangular, and the element finishes with a clean frame without you having to build a bracket. The R in the name stands for this rectangular version.
Inside works the same air motion transformer as in the model without plate: neodymium magnet, 4 Ω, 94 dB sensitivity (2.83 V/1 m) and a transmission range from 2,000 Hz to 31,000 Hz. The principle relies on a pleated foil that squeezes air out from between its folds. Because the foil travels only a short distance, it stays linear, and because it weighs almost nothing, it follows the signal without inertia. The large area of the AMTU80W1.1-R shifts these advantages towards more output and a lower crossover.
Use and enclosure
In practice the AMTU80W1.1-R is the tweeter for 2-way speakers with a larger mid-woofer and for 3-way systems where the transition to the treble may sit low. 2,000 Hz with 12 dB per octave is the lower limit; if you want headroom, cross slightly higher or steeper with 18 or 24 dB per octave. Active with DSP the hand-over can be set freely; passive, you have to account for the 4 Ω and the high level in the crossover.
Vertical dispersion is narrow, horizontal is wide. In a living room that is an advantage, because less sound arrives via ceiling and floor. When installing, recess the faceplate flush into the baffle so the edges of the plate do not become a diffraction source themselves.
What to look out for
- Rectangular faceplate 61 x 101 mm, 48 mm mounting depth: rectangular cut-out required.
- 94 dB at 4 Ω: amplifier must drive 4 Ω, plan level matching in the crossover.
- Usable from 2,000 Hz with 12 dB per octave; steeper filters add headroom.
- Narrow vertical dispersion: mount at ear height, recess the faceplate flush.
Frequently asked questions
When is the -R version the better choice over the element without plate?
When you do not want to build your own bracket and the rectangular look fits the concept. The faceplate takes care of mounting, and the 61 x 101 mm dimensions define the cut-out. Acoustically it is the same transducer with 94 dB and 4 Ω.
How low can I cross the AMTU80W1.1-R?
2,000 Hz at 12 dB per octave is the floor. For high levels and continuous use you should either cross well above that or use a filter with 18 to 24 dB per octave, so the foil is not overloaded near its resonance.
Can I combine the AMTU80W1.1-R with a mid-woofer of higher impedance?
Yes, that is the normal case. You calculate each crossover branch with its own impedance, so 4 Ω for the AMT. On top of that, the 94 dB almost always call for a voltage divider in front of the tweeter so both branches end up at the same level.
