18Sound 10MB600: 10" mid-bass with 3" voice coil, 98 dB and Qts 0.22
The 18Sound 10MB600 is a 10" driver from the MB series that the manufacturer files under woofer/midrange. The parameters tell the story more precisely: Qts 0.22, BL of 18.6 Tm and an EBP of 252 mark an extremely well damped motor of the kind you design for horn-loaded mid-bass units and for the low-mid section of large multi-way systems. At 98 dB sensitivity it ranks among the loudest 10" drivers in its class.
A ferrite magnet that brings the driver to 7.2 kg is responsible, together with a 3" voice coil rated at 450 W AES. The coil is generously sized for a 10" driver and keeps power compression low in continuous use. Moving mass of 38 g nevertheless stays low, which is why the 10MB600 remains usable up to 4,500 Hz. The range starts at 55 Hz, with Fs at 58 Hz.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 252 says it plainly: this driver belongs in a horn or in a small, high-tuned vented box. The vented guide value is just 6.5 l with fb 95 Hz and f3 126 Hz, sealed 3.6 l with fc 186 Hz. Both are midrange alignments, not bass enclosures. As a mid-bass between an 18" subwoofer and a compression driver the 10MB600 shows its strengths: high efficiency, little excursion and thermal headroom. In a front-loaded horn the strong motor can push efficiency even further.
Set the crossover to the sub well above 55 Hz; the handover to the horn can sit high thanks to the 4,500 Hz upper limit, with 1.4" or 2" compression drivers and horns from the 18Sound range as natural partners. Xmax of 6.5 mm leaves some margin for lower crossover points. Frequently asked questions
Is the 10MB600 suitable for a 2-way box with bass?
Only with a very high crossover to the subwoofer. With a vented guide value of 6.5 l at fb 95 Hz it produces no deep bass on its own. Its job is mid-bass above a separate bass system.
Which amplifier suits the 10MB600?
At 98 dB a channel with a few hundred watts into 8 Ω is enough to make sensible use of the 450 W AES. A high-pass above 55 Hz protects the 6.5 mm of Xmax from sub-bass overload.
Why is the 10MB600 so heavy?
The ferrite magnet needed for BL of 18.6 Tm brings the weight to 7.2 kg. Neodymium drivers with comparable motors weigh far less but cost more; in fixed installations the weight rarely matters.
