18Sound 10NTLS2000: 10" neodymium midrange with dual-gap motor and 2x2" voice coil
The 18Sound 10NTLS2000 belongs to the NTL range, in which 18Sound uses a motor with two air gaps and two voice coils. Instead of a single coil in one magnetic field, two 2" coils work in two separate gaps of the same neodymium magnet system. The principle: both coils share the load, the force is spread across two field regions, and the force factor stays more even across the stroke because one coil moves into its gap while the other moves out. For a midrange with low-mid duties that means less excursion-dependent distortion and better heat dissipation, because the doubled winding area spreads the heat over more metal.
The driver is classified as a 10" midrange with low mids (ML) and is offered in 8 Ω and 16 Ω versions. The neodymium motor keeps the weight down, which makes the 10NTLS2000 interesting for portable tops and line-array modules where every kilogram counts.
Use and enclosure
A dual-gap driver of this kind is at home as the low-mid and midrange section of three-way systems – between a subwoofer and a compression driver – or as a mid-woofer in a two-way box with subwoofer support. For enclosure and crossover frequencies you need the Thiele-Small parameters; the 18Sound page in the 42.audio driver database is the first place to look, and the enclosure calculator turns them into the right bass-reflex or sealed midrange chamber. As a rule of thumb for the NTL design: the high-pass belongs well above the resonance frequency so that excursion does not rob the coils of the linearity the motor is meant to deliver.
When choosing between 8 and 16 Ω, look at the total load: two 16 Ω drivers in parallel give 8 Ω, which spares the amplifier channel in dual-driver cabinets. At the top end the 10NTLS2000 hands over to a compression driver; the 18Sound horns and waveguides are the obvious complement.
What to look out for
- Dual-gap motor with 2x2" voice coil: more even force across the stroke, better heat distribution.
- 8 or 16 Ω depending on version: plan the total impedance for dual-driver cabinets.
- Neodymium magnet: low weight for portable tops and array modules.
- Midrange with low mids: set the high-pass well above the resonance frequency.
Frequently asked questions
What does the dual-gap motor offer over a normal voice coil?
Two coils in two air gaps move into and out of their fields in opposite directions, so the driving force stays more constant across the stroke and distortion at large excursions drops. In addition, the heat is spread over two windings, which supports continuous power handling.
Which impedance should I choose?
For a single driver on a normal amplifier channel, the 8 Ω version. If two drivers work in parallel in one box, the 16 Ω version is the right one so the channel sees 8 Ω again.
What enclosure does the 10NTLS2000 need?
As a low-mid/midrange driver bass-reflex is the obvious choice; for pure midrange duty a sealed chamber. Do the actual design with the TS parameters in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
