18Sound 12NCX910N: 12" coaxial driver with NSD dome, 99.5 dB and 450 W AES

The 18Sound 12NCX910N is the NSD-dome variant of the 12NCX910: same 12" woofer with 3" voice coil, same neodymium motor, same conical 80° horn – but an HF driver whose 3" diaphragm is made as an NSD dome rather than titanium. On compression drivers, diaphragm material and shape shape the behaviour in the top octave and the distortion structure, which is why 18Sound offers the same coax with two HF variants. If you know the character of the titanium diaphragm and are after something different, the N is the one.

All figures remain: 450 W AES power handling, 99.5 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω, Fs 57 Hz, Qts 0.3, Vas 58 l, BL 18.1 Tm, Mms 53 g, Xmax 6.9 mm and Sd 531 cm². The driver weighs 6 kg and needs 210 mm mounting depth. The ratio of Qms 10 to Qes 0.31 says a lot about the construction: the suspension hardly brakes, control comes from the motor – exactly what a driver for bass reflex and high levels needs.

Use and enclosure

Applications are the same as for the titanium model: stage monitors with high level demands, full-range tops, compact club and installation cabinets with one driver per enclosure. The coaxial layout turns woofer and HF into a point source whose transition stays the same at every angle; the conical 80° horn provides rotationally symmetric coverage suited to upright as well as lying mounting positions.

Bass reflex is the right choice at an EBP of 184. Guide value from the Thiele-Small parameters: around 27 l net, tuned to 71 Hz, f3 near 80 Hz. The sealed reference of 13 l at fc 134 Hz is only of interest when the driver works as a mid-high compartment above a subwoofer. The 210 mm mounting depth plus clearance behind it belongs in the cabinet plan. 18Sound recommends the crossover between the ways at 1.5 kHz; with DSP and delay alignment the transition can be tuned precisely, with a passive network you measure both ways in the cabinet. Solely in the HF driver: NSD dome on the N, titanium diaphragm on the standard model. Power handling, sensitivity, Thiele-Small parameters, enclosure and crossover frequency are identical. You decide by the treble character you want.

Bass reflex with around 27 l net tuned to 71 Hz as a guide, f3 near 80 Hz. Smaller volumes with higher tuning are conceivable for monitors but cost extension. Run the design through the enclosure calculator at 42.audio and remember the 210 mm mounting depth.

How much power should the amplifier have?

Matched to 450 W AES at 8 Ω, although the 99.5 dB sensitivity pulls high levels out of smaller amps too. More important than the last watt is a clean high-pass at 1.5 kHz for the HF section and a limiter against clipping.
