18Sound 12ND610: 12" neodymium midrange with Qts 0.14 for horn loading and three-way tops

Qts 0.14 is a figure you rarely see on direct radiators. The 18Sound 12ND610 has it because BL 24 Tm meets only 49 g of moving mass and Qes 0.15 damps the motor almost completely electrically. Drivers like this are built for horn loading or for midrange chambers where extension does not matter – the 12" cone with 531 cm² then delivers 102 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω with 450 W AES on a 3" voice coil.

Neodymium keeps the weight at 3.9 kg and the mounting depth at 124 mm. The usable range runs from 80 to 5,500 Hz, Xmax is 3.5 mm. Fs 46 Hz with Vas 94.4 l must not be read as bass capability: the EBP of 307 says clearly that without horn loading or a very small reflex volume the cone is not controlled in the bass and produces hardly any output there.

Use and enclosure

Guidelines from the TS parameters: bass-reflex about 5.0 l tuned to 113 Hz, lower cutoff around 188 Hz; sealed about 3.9 l with a 232 Hz corner frequency. Both are midrange-chamber dimensions – the 12ND610 works in a three-way top as a midrange with a high-pass well above 80 Hz, or in a midrange horn, for which its Qts and high force factor are ideal. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio is there for the exact design.

It hands over to the treble at up to 5,500 Hz, usually to a 2" compression driver on a large horn or, with a high crossover, to a 1" driver. The 1.17 mH inductance is moderate for a neodymium motor with a 3" coil; allow for the impedance rise in passive crossovers. Similarly aligned is the B&C 12PE32 with Qts 0.18 and Vas 101 l, but the 12ND610 is damped even harder.

What to look out for

  • Qts 0.14, EBP 307: horn loading or a small midrange chamber, no bass-reflex with extension.
  • 102 dB at 8 Ω: plan level matching to the woofer in the crossover.
  • Xmax 3.5 mm: set the high-pass well above 80 Hz.
  • 3.9 kg, 124 mm deep: neodymium, light for a 12" driver with a 3" coil.
  • 450 W AES: thermal headroom for continuous midrange duty.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 12ND610 in a bass-reflex box as a mid-woofer?

Not sensibly. The guideline is 5 l with a lower limit around 188 Hz – at Qts 0.14 the cone stays uncontrolled in a large box. For low mids take a driver with a higher Qts from the ND series.

Which horn is it meant for?

A midrange horn that loads the 12" cone in the range above 80 Hz. The low Qts and BL 24 Tm make sure the cone follows the horn load instead of resonating on its own. Actual horn dimensions depend on the lower cutoff you want.

Where to cross?

At the bottom well above 80 Hz, in a sealed chamber around the 232 Hz corner frequency. At the top up to a maximum of 5,500 Hz, rather lower depending on compression driver and horn.
