18Sound 15MB606: lightweight 15" midbass with 101 dB and 63 g cone mass

A 15" driver with just 63 g of moving mass is not a subwoofer but a midbass, and that is exactly how the 18Sound 15MB606 from the MB series is intended. The combination of ferrite magnet, 3" voice coil and light cone delivers 101 dB sensitivity and a usable range of 45 to 4,800 Hz. Power handling is 400 W AES and excursion 4.5 mm Xmax: both make clear that efficiency and midrange reproduction rank ahead of displacement here.

The Thiele-Small parameters fit the picture: Fs 43 Hz, Qts 0.35, a large Vas of 223 l, Qms 6.2 and a force factor of 15.1 Tm. At 6.7 kg the 15MB606 is also the lightest ferrite 15" in this comparison. The Qts of 0.35 is fairly high for a PA driver and allows forgiving alignments, while the EBP of 116 still points towards vented loading if the driver is to produce bass as well.

Use and enclosure

As the bass driver in a large 2-way system the 15MB606 needs room: the vented guideline is around 164 l tuned to 46 Hz, with a lower cut-off near 49 Hz. That is a classic layout for high-efficiency, vintage-style cabinets or guitar and bass cabs where efficiency matters more than compactness. Keep the 4.5 mm Xmax in mind: below the tuning frequency a high-pass filter is mandatory.

Its real strength, however, is the midrange. In a 3-way system with subwoofers handling the region below, the 15MB606 runs in a sealed midrange chamber; the guideline for that is roughly 72 l with a system resonance near 87 Hz, and smaller volumes push the resonance upwards, which is actually welcome with a high lower crossover. Towards the top, cross over well below 4,800 Hz to a compression driver; a 1.4" driver on a horn from the same manufacturer is the obvious partner. Mounting depth is 171 mm.

What to look out for

  • 101 dB sensitivity: high efficiency, ideal for valve amplifiers and efficient systems.
  • Only 4.5 mm Xmax: not a subwoofer, plan a high-pass below the tuning frequency.
  • Vas 223 l: large box when vented, sealed chamber when used as a midrange.
  • 400 W AES at 8 Ω, Re 5 Ω: does not need a big amplifier, but does need a limiter.
